235 vs 225

So I mounted a 225 tire on an 8.5" Wheel and it doesn't look overly stretched although it is noticeable up close, but the EDGE of the wheels looks VERY exposed.

This edge always worries me, I feel like a slight depression in the road may cause the edge of the wheel to hit the ground and bend since its so exposed. I'm guessing the first pothole I hit I will bend the wheels.

Will a 235 tire provide significantly better protection against the edge of the wheel striking against something?

Will attach pics in the next post to show the exposed edge of the wheels.

I would not say significantly more protection, but it does add a bit more meat to the side wall height.

Depending on what tire manufacturer you have, some 225's may appear more stretched or narrow then others. What tire are you currently running?

it also depends if the tire has a rim flange on it or not, which extends a harder rubber an additional 5 MM from the sidewall next to the lip.

ultimately, it really depends how the wheel strikes. there's a good chance that you may start to develop rock chips/pits at the edge of the wheel, as well as potential damage from a pothole where the tire does not flex enough.

Tires are achilles ATR Sport.... was going to go with 235 for peace of mind, but not really sure how much safer I would be with the 235's/

Achilles ATR Sports run extremely narrow which is why it may appear more stretched then most 225's on 8.5" wheels.

Hey I think someone was selling 235s Contis on local forum, search for it. Get em. You saw my 275 falken and now how much wider my 275 contis are.
my 235 falken in front are wider then ur tires in the pic but conti prolly be even wider even tho they are 235.

Not sure how the conti's would fit with my 10mm spacers and lowered ride height, it might become a really tight squeeze.

The 225mm figure is not a "tread" width, but the section width.

From our tech article : " A tire's section width (also called 'cross section width') is the measurement of the tire's width from its inner sidewall to its outer sidewall (excluding any protective ribs, decorations or raised letters) at the widest point. "
