Could be liquid oil getting sucked into cylinder 5. The PCV gets gunked up, the valve fails to close, and liquid oil gets sucked from the crankcase into all cylinders, but worst into #5.

$1k for intake cleaning is a little steep, even for a dealer. Get it done at a local indy ASAP and report back.

Cylinder 5 is the worse for build up. The pcv main hole is on top of it.

Thanks for the replies. I'm going to take the car in for walnut blasting this week. I'm going to try upgrading to the RB PCV valve as well: http://www.rbturbo.com/products/accessories/rbpcv

Even though I hadn't thrown any VANOS codes, I cleaned the solenoids today just to eliminate that as a potential source of misfires. No help.

Is there a way to verify that adaptions have been reset properly? I've followed the instructions (ignition on, foot on gas for ~30 s, etc.) but can't tell if it's actually worked or not. Or is it even worth trying in this case...?

If you order an INPA K+DCAN cable, I can help you with the software (FREE - I do not charge for my assistance...). INPA will let you do some diagnostics and adaptation reset. I also have DIS if you want to try using it. I won't be able to assist with the install, but it's completely documented so you shouldn't need any help. Just PM me and I'll provide you the links.
