Michelin PSS sidewall rolling over
Hi All
I am dealing with an issue of sidewalls rolling over in moderate cornering. To be clear here, we are talking street driving, not even track. When corners (i.e. cloverleaf freeway exit/entry) are taken with moderate speed, I get what feels like (or is?) body roll and the result is the image attached (scuffing marks along the sidewall). Current mods are KW v1s and Swaybarbarians (front and back). Alignment pins are pulled and front camber is around -1.2, zero toe. I have tried many different pressures. Currently up to 38PSI cold all around. Vehicle is an e92 328xi with 50K miles. Tire size is 225/45/R17 (stock wheels). I am out of ideas here and everything I have ever read about PSS's is a raving review. Any help would be much appreciated. |

Looks like the Michelin man and digits above and to the right are ok. Think the tire might me rubbing in the fender well??? Good luck.

I can't imagine the sidewall is rubbing in the fender. This is a stock wheel/tire size and the drop from the V1's is modest. Camber is also > -1.0. Do you really think it could be rubbing in the fender?

This is FAR more likely than the tire rolling over that far during cornering.

Thanks for the feedback, guys!
What perplexes me is how with rubbing the fender can occur when I am on stock wheel/tire sizes, with upgraded sways and coilovers. Perhaps I should move this thread to the suspension forum. |

What are the specs on the wheels? It surprises me that your rubbing with the stock wheels especially with the added camber. Are you using spacers?

The specs are 17x8 et34. You shouldn't be rubbing with those specs. Can you take more pictures that show how low you are and how close the wheels are to the fenders? Also is there any black marks on the inside of the fenders?

maybe you just rubbed against a curb or something.

Thanks for the feedback. I posted some images showing clearance. I have been looking inside the fenders for a while and never found anything conclusive. I certainly doesn't look like they could contact unless suspension was bottomed out.
I know it's not from curbs. First, its on the driver side wheel, which mostly takes curbs out. Second, the frequency of the marks occuring would suggest that I was curbing wheels daily. Thanks |

Looks like there is still plenty of room. Have you tried turning the wheel from lock to lock to make sure its not rubbing somewhere else when you turn the wheel?

I have the same and never felt tire shoulder collapsing (and I could definitively feel it with the stock Turanza crap the car came with). Don't know where it's coming from, always assumed curbing, but then that's a lot of curbs.
From the wear marks on your first picture, you are a bit over inflated. I do 33f-37r on mine (same wheels offset etc, rwd). |

If you're running factory sizes, on factory wheels, with the proper pressure, I highly doubt the sidewalls are rolling over. These tires are not known for having super soft sidewalls or anything like that. Most likely something brushed up against the tire. Is it around the whole tire? Or just a portion?

My thought is that the front pressures with out the Run Flats is too low. I just changed to Bridgestone Pole Positions and find that 37 or better in the front felt right. Our car sticker for inflation was 32 I believe, that is how the tire shop inflated, I could almost feel them roll on the way home.
I also think it is not fender rubbing with these sizes on a stock car. Most likely, as stated above, a close graze to a curb or something. |

Your scrub line is no where near the sidewall; i can see it at the top of the pic. In fact your tires are over inflated and have more usuable tire patch. Draw a chalk line vertically up the side wall to the contact patch, drive hard, see where the scrub line is. After that you will know what you are looking for in the future.

Fronts are hitting the front bumper tabs if at all, rears are just rubbing on the fender liner. Are you worried about it though? My PSS rub everyday but does not effect driveability even with 5 adults in the car. I'll post my tire sidewalls in a bit and show you how much rubbing I get ONLY during aggressive ramp turns/>75mph freeway dips/driveways.

Thanks for the feedback all. Agree, that I could be overinflated. I am at 38PSI all around as I have been experimenting to try to eliminate the rubbing/roll. That said, I know that the rubbing can't be from curbs. It happens EVERY time I drive the car reasonably hard. I am not brushing curbs every time I drive.
It's just perplexing that I can have rubbing when I have suitable wheel gap combined with KW V1s and swaybarbarians. My concerns was that some other suspension component could be worn, causing excessive roll, despite the sways and CO's. Maybe I am just being a bit neurotic here... |

That doesn't look like the tire is rolling over to me. If it was, you'd see marks along most or all the edge of the tire, not just in one spot.
It looks like that area of tire didn't get enough tire black. |
