Oil Filter Tool

I got a 2009 E90 and I was wondering what size is the filter removal tool and where can I find one cheap?

I believe it is 86mm with 16 flutes?

Literally any auto parts store has a tool that fits. It seems you already measured and counted the flutes, but most would also let you walk out and test fit a few so you can buy the one that fits.

For what it's worth I have a master kit from astro pneumatic that was really cheap that I bought years ago. It has about 7-9 different sizes in it that have worked on every filter I have ever encountered in automotive as well as motorcycles. I paid $29 for the entire kit

The auto parts store around my area doesn't seem to be that great.... so I might need to look online.

I bought a stamped steal oil filter wrench for my car and yes, something along those lines in terms of size and 16 sided. But it's for a Volvo! So have to trick my car into looking the other way when getting this tool out! LOL

Works fine, but does tend to "wedge" itself to the oil filter cap, and of course since the engine has to be warm (operating temperature) before draining, this get really hot! But once you refit the cap and lightly torque it up, all you need to do to release it is lightly turn the wrench back, then off she goes...

I use a rubber strap wrench. Easier to find and cheaper.

I bought one from Walmart, the kind that looks like a cap that fits over the top of the filter. It was not snug enough...
however...
all you need is some duct tape or a microfiber towel to fit over the filter to snug it up. works fine.

I purchased a rubber strap wrench and it worked pretty good. I also used a paint pen and placed a little mark on the cap/block so I could tighten the cap correctly.

Try to find the proper tool and not buy a strap wrench. Something tells me a strap wrench isn't good for the seal of the oil filter housing.

Asked a dealer and they said they don't sell it. Try eBay.

This is a good point! Since the oil filter housing gasket is a known fail item, my suspicion is that it is unsettled/damaged by possibly too aggressive loosening/tightening of the oil filter cap. So the trick is to apply gentle and gradual force, and not "yank" it loose or tight. And I suppose with the strap it might also apply the force slightly off centre compared to the proper wrench tool. The wrench tool that I bought was really cheap actually, but was a bit tricky to find, but definitely worth the trouble getting it.

I have all sorts of strap wrenches. Using strap wrenches just felt like I was putting a lot of pressure on one side and may possibly do permanent damage. You are better off getting the 86mm socket.

This experience was in the case where a strap wrench was not enough to loosen the cap. I am sure if it was a case where slightly better than finger effort was needed, a strap wrench would have been fine.

I never thought I'd need more than finger effort. But one oil change evolution, I did. And a strap wrench just felt like it was going to cave in and crack one side of the cap.
