Water pump Q for those that changed theirs

For those that had their pumps died prematurely, let's say before 50-60k miles. Does your second pump last longer? Or it dies again for another 50-60k miles?
I guess what I am asking is, should I just change the pump every 50-60k miles as a preventive maintenance? Since I commute a lot on freeways, I just don't want to deal with being stranded. Thanks!

I had to change mine at 51,000 miles and it was the water pump and thermostat.

I would like to know as well because this is my wife's car and I'd hate for her to be stranded on the freeway.

In for answers too...I'm at 73k and on original WP/T-stat. I've been considering ordering from Tischer just to have them on hand.

I am on my 2nd pump now and have already surpassed the mileage of the original. The new pump is a Continental, the old was Siemens - my research of this and other forums tells me that the Siemens was prone to fail and BMW replaced it with a Continental design.

I was not planning to replace again unless it fails; although the 1st failure left me stranded and furious, in an unsafe situation on a highway - I may just replace it when i surpass 100K or 120K km on the new pump.

Thanks for your reply! Sounds like the new pump is better then? Yeah, rule of thumb is to replace by the time it hits 100k miles, I wouldn't risk it beyond that.
By brother made it to 130k miles til it fails on original pump, but he's on a 328i, I don't know if they're using the same pump tho
May I ask at mileage did your original pump died?
