Oil Change; What do you use to lift up your vehicle?
Hey all just purchased a couple little mods from ECS along with a oil change kit as my car is just about due. Ive yet to perform any work on this car so I haven't had to jack it up yet. Im wondering what the consensus says about lifting there e90?? I attempted to roll my floor jack under my car (2-1/2ton) but it wouldn't fit. Ive been reading a lot of users use "rhino ramps"? Im contemplating on purchasing ramps as ive never used them and not sure how well they work. My main concern would be actually getting on top of the ramps as I've read horror stories of cars falling of them or the ramps actually slip.
I guess my options are either a really low profile jack, or the ramps. What do you guys use? If the ramps, how hard is it getting up them with out falling off or them slipping? Thanks for the advice & info! |

Is your car lowered or stock??
If stock, rhino ramps work great. Haven't had a problem with them, recommend having someone spot for you to let you know how far up the ramps you are so you don't gun it over them. If lowered, look around for low profile ramps, i have seen them but don't remember where at the moment. The regular rhino ramps are too steep for lowered cars and you will have to stack wood before the ramps to get high enough to get on the ramps. |

I really want to eventually invest in a nice low profile and long reach jack, but a good set of ramps is what I am going to get for now to make life easier (and safer). Up until now I have been simply using my two 2 ton normal jacks to lift the car - have not found a usable hard point to jack the car up on the sides other than the normal jack points, so no way to lift the car and then place jack stands like I can with the E46 which does have a hard point along each side.
I agree with having someone assist you when driving the car onto the ramps - key is to have the ramps placed correctly and in line with the car etc. Then just a case of carefully getting the car onto them. |

This I know, hence the "nice low profile and long reach jack" - my current jacks won't reach and are as such too tall, plus they are only rated as 2 tons which is pushing it a bit for a single jack...

Even with a low profile floor jack, my car was too low for it to go under. Regular ramps had too much incline and my bumper would push it away before my wheels could go up. I went with this low profile ramp
http://www.amazon.com/Pair-Plastic-4...w+profile+ramp Works great. Gets the front up high enough for my floor jack to go under. Can also use 2x6. I didn't have much luck with 2x4's. My tires just kept pushing them away. Maybe get 1x6 and shore it up to the height you need. Also, for a while I used the tire change jack that came with the spare wheel I ordered to rise one side of the front of my car. This made it possible for me to push my low profile floor jack to the front center jacking point. But I thought it was a pain in the butt way to do it. When I was in college and dead broke but needed an oil change (especially since my Solara was prone to sludge and didn't want to procrastinate), not to mention my roommate at the time had everything except jack stands and I was too ghetto to go buy some...
... So I just backed up the side of my roommate's driveway parallel to the street, going up via the driveway ramp. Worked perfectly and actually felt sturdier than jack stands. Kinda like the pic above, but neatly parallel to the street and parked with the right wheels at the edge. Not the best idea, but may work LMAO

Yep, this is partially why I haven't bought one of these low profile jacks, but I reckon driving onto some planks will sort this out. My E46 is somehow a bit lower especially on the front end compared to my E90, so as it is, I can't get my normal jacks under to lift it. I had to make a mini-ramp from some planks of wood which does the trick - lifts the car roughly 2 inches off the ground which is enough for the moment. I must just put some rubber strips under these planks so that they don't slip - at the moment have to get someone to use their foot to keep it from shifting as I edge the wheels onto them, once on then the weight of the car keeps them in place of course...
