E92 Passenger side water leak
Took my car into BMW to get looked at as I have a leak on passenger side, advised them I believed it was coming from the door and showed them a pic.
They have had a look and confirmed this, lady called and I don't remember the exact figure but it was £650+ she quoted to repair the issue and dry the carpet out. This sounds pretty steep to me, or is that reasonable for a main dealer? |

Release the door card and it will probably be the membrane behind the card. Make sure you dry it off where it seals and reseal it using silicone. Then get a wet and dry vac to suck what water you can from the carpet. Or bring it over to me and I will do it for half the price with no vat lol.

Definitely the vapour barrier behind the door card. it is sealed to the door with butyl rubber sealant which you can buy a sealant gun type tube off ebay for a fiver or so. Mine leaked after heavy rain and it turned out that the guy who replaced the door glass after a break in had not resealed the vapour barrier properly

Have called them and asked for a breakdown, parts £22 rest labour. Have instructed them not to bother and just let me know when part has arrived and I will collect the car and settle up for work already done.
Understand bmw are going to be more expensive but Local indy want £150 all in.. Ridiculous difference |

as mentioned above, all you need to repair it is butyl rubber sealant.
I recently had the same in passenger's door but with much less water coming in. I bought the butyl rubber sealant and some plastic tools to remove the cards from the doors without damaging them. although there wasn't a problem with the other doors, I spent time to make sure that every door's insulation membrane is in perfect shape as was in day one from factory. also, there is a huge difference in feeling and sound when closing a door now.. you could do it yourself just spending time and 20-30 pounds

Quick update on this, bmw did the work minus drying it out which came to around £250 in the end.
Have noticed that the window now doesn't close on that side and the speaker doesn't work either now.. Pretty unimpressed as I now have to take it back. |

Somehow I think that £250 needs to be coming down sharply I would demand partial refund. Based on your hourly rate that you have to charge them to bring the car back and then waste to get bad work resolved.

replaces the seal here. It's for an e90 but suspect the e92 is fairly similar didn't notice you've sorted it out. They probably haven't connected up the speakers etc. Still, it looks like an hour job at most. Last edited by wallsmk2; 10-29-2013 at 06:51 AM.. |

Just got back from BMW, all sorted now, they'd left the audio cables loose and the window had hit it going down apparently, pretty poor.
You live and learn, I certainly won't be wasting any time or money going to BMW in the future. Thank you for your input all. |

maybe you should contact dealer for the 3rd time and when you visit him ask for a proper job, vehicle replacement till they fix it properly and compensation money for all this story. this is why I don't trust someone messing with my car and don't allow me to be present, customer don't have to stand on technician's head but at least owner should be able to have a proper look when a guy performs a job at his property.
the least one could say if he was in your position, it is frustrating...

Car is already back at BMW, I have a courtesy car while they investigate.
Ultimately, fourth day of it being at BMW, I had to send an email explaining the problem including pictures to the engineer.. Unbelievable scenes. |

"From: Alex Webster
Sent: 05 November 2013 17:27 To: 'dan.smith2@ir.inchcape.co.uk' Subject: EX57 XXF Hi Dan, Pictures attached, from what I understand the seals/membrane on the door are meant to route the water so it does not exit the door onto the sill, this however does not appear to be the case currently and before as shown in the pictures, this then I assume gets in through the plastic under the carpet. alex from first pic my understanding is that water dropped from the bottom of the door, so this must be from the sealing membrane and butyl tape should be used to keep it properly attached to door panel, as they claimed that they did.
in 2nd pic I think that water seems to have entered from an upper point and not from the bottom of the door as it is appeared in 1st pic. inform us with the result and hopefully all will be ok at the end

I'm just fed up that time wise this is the 5th day BMW have had my car now for what I feel is a simple issue. They are now saying there are rubber bungs missing in the door, why they couldn't tell me this before is beyond me.
Anyway they have ordered these in and are going to put it in writing that the car does not leak, I will have to take it back to my friends spray booth, remove the carpet and leave it drying in there before I can put it back together and wait till it rains next. |
