Because the check engine light is annoying. I would want it cleared ASAP too

I'm sure someone would be kind enough to diagnose and clear this for you at the next meet.

Also, an easier way to do this yourself would be to get one of these bluetooth OBD-II dongles:

and purchase the Torque App (Android) for $5
