I would think you will get snorkel air at speed due to the ram effect but none stopped because of a lack of a pressure drop in the box to pull it in.

Think DCI with the snorkel left in-place would be just as good stopped but better at speed.

It might be time to track down some old airboxes/lids and filters and see what I can fab.
What about a Helix style intake, but instead of the intake attached through a hole to the side of the oem box via one of these:

It attached to the airbox lid via something like this:

Obviously the angle is wrong on that (its just a random picture I found online, but you get the idea). Then to switch back to stock, all you would have to do is swap lids. There would be no need to remove the airbox.

This is pretty much what will happen. Also any air that does make it in through the snorkel will become turbulent where it meets the air coming in from the engine bay. In fact the cross flow may actually impede air flow into the intake tract.

Allow me to reiterate. You're making the filter element through which all the air will pass smaller, this will cause more friction, and also impede flow because there is certain amount of air that can pass through a certain amount of area of filter at a certain pressure.

You have made the filter area smaller. That's why this is a complete fail, end of story.

This is why cone filters are used because they can create more filter material area for air to pass through so that lesser suction pressure is needed for more air to pass through.

Boom.

Cold air wouldn't be sucked in as much, if any after you cut a hole in the box like that. you would need to ram the air in there, which scoop may do at high speeds. Overall, IMO that idea is a fail.

Actually if you just put the filter on the turbo inlet pipe side that would suffice. You'd have the cold air from the snorkel and extra airflow from the top.

that's basically the Dinan intake.

Not even close. Without the lid you loose all the airflow from the bottom and the turbos just suck from a smaller area. The dinan lid adds another flow element to the box.

Has anyone tried just completely gutting the internal baffles from the inside of the stock airbox, remove the stock filter and then just rig up two foam type filters over the turbo internal intake tubes and putting the stock lid back on? This may be the way to go with keeping the stock box and everything still looking stock. I'd bet you would get some pretty noticeable gains.

You also have to think about flow characteristics with the DCI vs stock modification that you have presented. With a DCI you have a direct less turbulent flow than with the the stock box, assuming that your flow diagram is correct. It seems to me that there would be less restriction with a DCI. I am not sure about how much this plays into the work of turbos etc.

Right. Exactly like Klepper1 posted.
