hey guys, i just purchased a used 2011 328i coupe 6MT with the sport package and premium package. it has a black exterior and red interior (i love the look). i noticed it had a usb port to plug in a phone. i connected my iphone 5 to it and it says that no usb is connected and i cant play music off my phone. i was wondering what i need to do so that i can play music off my phone while its connected to the usb port so that my phone can charge as well. i know that i can use the aux cable but i want to know if theres a way to use the usb port and control it through the car. thanks

2011 was a split year for this feature. Early 2011's up to IIRC March build need a "Y" cable that plugs into both the USB and the headphone jack next to it to work. Later production just use the standard Apple USB cable.

You are probably out of luck with an iDevice that uses the new Lightening cable. With the old 30pin connector the Y cable splits the analog audio out while letting the control data go through the USB. That is not possible with Lightening. My July '11 car works fine with my Lightening equipped iPad Mini.

you can buy the iphone 5 charger adapter which will plug into the older generation chargers. I do that and it's around $30 but allows you to use all the old chargers you have lying around, which is probably a lot if youve had other iphones
