Winter's coming, need tire advice please...

Hi all, I have a 2009 335i w/ sport package. Still have the orig Pilot Sport PS2 summer tires on them. My rears need replacing. I live on Long Island, NY so winter is about 3-4 months. Obviously the car is horrendous in snow and I'm afraid to take it out in snow. I was thinking of a set of all season tires that would be give me good traction in snow and still perform on dry. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

The best performance you're going to see during winter is going to be from a dedicated winter tire. All-seasons will get you by through light snow, but if it really starts coming down, you'll want a dedicated winter set. That being said, if you want some good all-seasons, check out the Continental ExtremeContact DWS, General G-Max AS-03, or Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3. For actual winter tires, I'd say the Bridgestone Blizzak LM-60 and Dunlop SP Winter Sport 3D are pretty solid choices.

Thanks for the quick reply. This might be a dumb question but since my car is rear wheel drive, would there be a noticeable difference in snow with the all seasons as opposed to whats currently on my car (runflat summers)?

Going from Summer tires to All Season tires would be better in the snow, but it would still suck compared to having dedicated winter tires. The difference in traction is really quite amazing and almost unbelievable until you've driven the same car with All Season tires, and then swap on some winters.

You would definitely notice a difference in the snow when comparing the two. Summer tires do not belong in the snow!

Thanks everyone. Think I might pull the trigger on the Continental ExtremeContact DWS. Seem to get the best ratings on tirerack.

I appreciate the advice.

get snow tires. Freezing rain is a nightmare for rwd as the tail can snap instantly. I tested it. With snows and 50/50 balance the car is great.

I wouldn't even drive in the snow with summer tires and awd. Got stuck driving my old wrx in an a early snow with summer tires because I didn't get to switch to my winter set. I've driven in blizzards up to hunter/Windham, Vermont etc...and those 10miles home from work were the scariest I've ever driven. With the awd I Was able to accelerate but once I had to turn or brake....the car just skid. So to answer your question. YES you will notice a difference between your ps2 and an all season tire.

My 335i isn't my daily winter driver...but I still went with a winter tire on my stock 162's

I have xdrive and with stock run flats it was still horrible in the snow last winter in ny also.. I bought dedicated bridgestone blizzak winter tires for this winter and am ready for anything that comes my way.. Rather be safe than sorry

I'll take my rwd car with snows over an xi with all seasons any day of the week.

Get a set of snows. If they save your ass once they pay for themselves.

You have a similar problem as I did when I bought my 330i w/ sport package...I bought it late in the year and it needed all new tires when I bought it. So my dilemma (and yours as well) was, "Do I buy new winter tires to replace my worn summer tires then 3 months later buy an all new set of summer tires?" Buying 2 complete sets of tires in a matter of a few months...ouch. I went with DWS. Now I don't drive it in snow deeper than 4" unplowed as my lowered stance is more limiting than the tires I use. Quite frankly, in city driving, traveling on roads with more than 4" of unplowed snow on the surface is quite rare in Indianapolis.
