Stupid Question

Yesterday I got my original OEM battery changed to the upgraded group 49 (works great!) on my 07' e90 328i.
However when I was looking at the battery assembly before I had it changed, I didn't see that black/gray foam piece attached to the battery hold down rod.
We also have an 06' e90 330i and it has that foam piece attached.

My question is do all models have this and what the heck is it supposed to do?
