My lightning to 30 adaptor cable came today. I plugged it into the cradle plugged the phone into the adaptor and it all worked!!! (Pandora, steering wheel controls, etc) I used the short version of the cable. It doesn't snap in but it can sit next to the cradle or outside the armrest next to the e brake. One thing is that the cradle needs to be tricked into staying in the phone installed position or it pushes out the adaptor. I pushed it back and wedged a trimmed plastic zip tab into the opening and it works perfectly. Btw I have an 09 e93.
Also I bet someone with tech skills could actually re work this cradle to make it snap in again.

You should be able to get the same functionality using your lightning to USB cable. The only difference in connection through the snap in was it allowed for video input but the adapter doesn't do this.
One down side I could see with connecting this way is you are using the digital to analog converter that is built in to the adapter rather than the one in the combox. I don't know for sure but I would expect the DAC in the combox is better.

It doesn't physically fit. What he did was take the lightning to 30-pin adapter cable and plugged that in to the cradles 30-pin port. The phone itself would then be plugged in to the lightning plug on the cable and stuck somewhere.
