Downshift?

So I live in indiana. We recently got a few inches of snow and I was out screwin around and noticed some differences in the tranny. I turned of the traction control and every now and then my car would downshift while I was gettin sideways and what not. When I say downshift, I mean it felt like going from third gear to first, rpms would jump way up. Thoughts? I bought the car last year with 68k miles. It has 78k miles now and all I've done is an oil change and some miscellaneous things. It didn't come with any service records so I don't know of any service done on the tranny.

Also curious about burning oil. I'm due for a change in bout 500 miles and I've added 3 quarts in between. I haven't noticed any leaks either. Yes, I think I bought a nice car that wasn't very well maintained but I have it now so I'd like to get it all taken care of!
