When I bought my car one of the things I really liked was the iPod out functionality I was able to get with an iPhone 4 Media snap-in. As so often happens, the iPhone 4 was replaced by the iPhone 5 and I was disappointed to learn that the new lightning connector would make the iPod out function impossible. I liked the LTE capabilities of the iPhone 5 though so I went ahead and got it and resigned myself to a life without Ipod out in my car. I sold my snap-in Media cradle and went on.

Recently I started to get an idea. There are iPods out there with video output capabilities that could support the Ipod out! I was able to snag my brothers 4th gen iPod touch with a shattered screen. I loaded it up with my music and it still works! I got a used Media cradle off eBay for $50 as well. While the cradle is designed for an iPhone 4 the 30-pin connector is the same as for the iPod (and really any Apple device before lightning). I plugged in the iPod touch and *boom!* I have iPod out function again!! It isn't the prettiest setup as the iPod doesn't perfectly fit into the cradle but it is close enough. An even better solution would be to use an old iPhone 4/4s but those are still pricey.

I set up the iPod to join my home network and automatically sync to my computer so now whenever I pull into my garage it connects and syncs. This means it is always up to date and all my latest music and videos are available when I go for a drive (granted no videos while driving of course ).
