Good idea with printing this off along with the phone recording.
Anyone else?

Just for Information I Contacted BMW customer services regarding this problem and asked if it is a known issue.

Yup, I have this too, it's very intermittent!
Left side (drivers side) cuts out, I think the whole side including the sub but it's never long enough for me to really be able to tell for sure. Atleast it cuts both the Mid & tweeter. I soldered the connections so I'm quite sure they are 100% fine... It was working fine for over 6 months, the problem started a few months ago... I can sometimes drive for hours with no problems and others it can happen more frequently and quickly... |

I have now been able to troubleshoot this further.
The frequency of the left side cutting out has increased in the last weeks. It has cut out the left side a bit longer aswell, I put the fader all the way to the left when it did. There actually is some music still playing, but it's very very low volume. I'd say it's like when you press Mute on some headunits it actually only lowers the volume by 20dB or so... This tells me that the cables are fine. I contacted my place of purcache, they asked me to run the system without the amplifier just like you Nico. Of course that is easier said than done but I took some measurements with a multimeter and jumpered the Alpine kit's cable harness. It's not pretty but it works, and above all the sound no longer cuts out, so that confirms the problem is with the amplifier... So I will be getting a new Amplifier in the mail soon Last edited by Per Hansson; 09-10-2012 at 11:14 AM.. |

I got my new amplifier a few weeks ago and it's been all golden since then, sound works as it should now
In case you want to bypass the amplifier like I did I made this super advanced drawing of it I hope I don't have to explain the part about saying try this at your own risk I did not bother to wire up the underseat speakers since the Alpine kits speakers are heavy enough as it is for being driven by just the headunit... |

I've been getting this problem on my passengers side mid speaker and it's now driving me nuts, every journey the speaker cuts in and out and I spend too much time in my car to ignore it.
Looking at replacing the AMP, but not to flush with money at the moment, can anyone recommend a replacement AMP that isn't too expensive? Cheers |

This topic kinda puts me off this upgrade
Is it not possible to jut RMA the AMP as faulty to wherever you bought it from? Sounds like if you installed it yourself dealers just going to try and blame the wiring. I know its different, but from building PCs I am use to just contacting the supplier/manufacture of the faulty part directly for a replacement. IT being an OEM part is this not an option? |

xPETEZx; Well as you see in my posts above I was able to RMA just the amplifier.
They did want me to test and make sure it really was the amplifier though. (I.e. bypass it as I described above in the picture) That is very understandable though, cables often go bad, especially in the doors hinges where they are routed through and thus move every time you open the door... Or via the crimp connections which are done by the person installing this kit (I opted to solder my cables instead for this reason) Actually I have a friend with a 325i just like me but stock HiFi system, his drivers side speaker is too cutting out. Probably cable or speaker problem in his case... |

Mine does this too. Very randomly though. Has done since I installed it, so there is definitely a problem with the amp.
I loose the whole lot but it clicks back in after 2 secs or so. I just live with it. |

Update
Guys,
I had my Alpine Amp replaced under warranty yesterday by BMW! The dealer was blaming my 'USB cigarette adaptor' for charging my phone! I mentioned this post and said the issue has been ongoing for a year, the USB charger has only been in the car for two weeks.. Anyway, if you have this issue I would get it fixed ASAP, it only get's worse if left! The warranty is 2 years for the Alpine Retrofit Kit. Regards, Tichx.
