320d howling, now not boosting. Turbo?

Just been out to do the annual pre xmas pressie run and my 2007 163ps 320D started to howl like a wolf stuck under the bonnet and lost it's normal pull (like ive got no boost). It lasted the 5 mile journey home and stopped howling, but now I still have no boost, it just pulls like a non turbo diesel.

Could it just be a split pipe or should I budget for a new turbo? in which case is it an N47 or M47?

Check your boost pipes, top and bottom of the intercooler. If you're lucky ones popped off or split. If it's howling means it's still spinning, could be that the bearings are failing but no boost all of a sudden with no prior warning could just be a pipe's come loose.

Just been out for a proper look. Cant see or feel and leaks in the intercooler hoses. Took the car for a drive, everything sounds ok but still no boost. Gonna have to get it booked in when the garage reopen f I can't think of anything else to try.

Car went in to the garage today and they diagnosed it as the turbo. Not only is the howl coming directly from the turbo, but it has a loose shaft too. Gonna cost £530 to get it rebuilt by Midland Turbos, plus various parts & labour from the local garage who are doing removal/refitting, and an oil service for good measure.

I heard that there are better turbos for those cars. Can you not go for a better version? or would that cost too much.

PS: My comment is based on the fact if you have Mitsubishi turbo.

Yes it's the Mitsubishi turbo. I don't know which other one would be better and how, but i thought about a second hand one, but they're not much cheaper and a rebuild comes with a 2yr warranty.

Is a hybrid actually something that you do with these as the standard turbo is a Variable Vane, which as I understand produces the same effect of boosting at low revs and building boost as the revs rise?

Could have been worse, BMW charge £1128+vat for a turbo

I feel your pain

I had mine fail back in nov 2011, BMW did it as a gesture of goodwill and I had to pay for 50% of the labour - cost me £800

2 years and 2 months down the line, its happened again !

seriously hacked off...3 months out of warranty (the 2 year turbo warranty)

had enough of the car now, trying to px it

best of luck

Quick update.
Turbo taken off the car this morning. Taken in the missus car to Midland Turbos. Same day recon for £530. Posted back to me on a 24 hr delivery. Rang the garage to keep them in the loop so they can book it's refitting for monday morning, then i just have their bill to pay on top of the one just paid to Midland Turbos.

Pic for reference.

In addition, it's worth noting that Midland Turbos recognise that BMW have a high failiure rate of Thrust Bearings and that they fit a higher spec one as part of the recon, part of the reason why I chose them to do the recon even though they were not the cheapest by far.

Final update.
The turbo arrived on Monday (excuse the poor photo. It looks brand new, but I was in a rush to get it to the garage).

The car is now back home, fully repaired following a garage bill of £450, which includes an oil service, an engine breather (supposed to change this with any Turbo fault) and the labour to change the turbo.

So that's £980 all in
At least the turbo now has a 2 year warranty and my oil service now shows it's not due until Jan 2016.
