You will have to register it. Even though the battery is the same specs, apparently the charging system needs to have the "timer" reset otherwise it will still think that you have an old battery in there and undercharge it. Your car won't blow up or anything, but the battery has reduced life.

I replaced my '07 battery in September and never registered it. Works fine, but in the cold weather, I started getting the low battery warning if the car was on for like as little as 1 minute without the engine running. So basically the battery is being undercharged. Waiting on my cable so I can register it. Sort of irritating that an "intelligent" system basically just runs on a timer. Mine is driven for very short distances sometimes 1.2 mi. each way and sits for a few days at a time so the system is probably always somewhat undercharged. People who drive 30 mi. each way to work every day may never need to register since they drive so much even an undercharging system will still charge the battery.

I was just going to download the software and do it since it's free. But I'm sure someone local to you can hook it up. Driving home is absolutely fine. It's been 4 months and I still haven't registered. Other than the occasional warning light, no issues.
