That's a CIC NAV which will play DVDs. You sure the DVD you tried was a region 4 DVD? I wonder if the CIC DVD region coding is wrong. Mine seems to default code to All Other Regions when it should be set to 4. Oh and yes you do have a hard drive. To upload music to it you need to insert a USB stick into the port in your glove box.

According to the 2009 E90 brochure (international), cars with Business Nav have a CD drive and integrated data storage for maps only (no hard disk for audio). See attached pic.

I put music on a memory stick and plug it in, idrive recognizes the songs under "aux" "usb" input

The USB port in the glove box is for updating the CIC Business maps (aka. MOTION).

The following thread applies to the F30 model with Business Nav, but it seems they also have option "S700A, AREA-CODE 4, Area-Code 4 for DVD" but without a physical DVD Player:

Confused - CD versus DVD
