Awful wheel/hub corrosion
Anyone else get a ton of corrosion where the wheels mate to the hub? Maybe this is a just northern issue with all of the road salt present?
Everytime I take my wheels off (brake jobs, etc) the wheels are very stubborn to come off and have a lot of white corrosion around the ring that mates into the wheel. When I had new tires mounted they neglected to clean them up which resulted in the wheel not sitting flush against the hub. Over the course of a week a vibration developed, and then got worse (I thought a balancing weight had fallen off initially). Then I noticed that my wheel bolts were vibrating loose!! Replaced all the bolts and the shop cleaned up/rebalanced all 4 corners. Could have ended very badly. Next time I take them off I'm going to be putting a light coating of grease on the mating surface to try to prevent it from oxidizing. Anybody have any other tricks to deal with this? |

I get the same thing. I usually sandpaper it off and use WD-40. But the grease would work or you could also use Never Seeze

I wonder why it happens so bad on this car. I've never seen corrosion this bad on other cars... just the material/construction of the hub and wheel I guess?

There's a DIY on sanding off the rust then paint it for protection. Not full proof protect as it may return after a year or so.

I would just apply a thin film of copper grease to the hub faces. Ideally one should clean the hub faces each time you have to take the wheels off for balancing etc, and then apply fresh grease.

So I had the wheels off, and there was corrosion/buildup that looked just like a weld bead in the corner where center lip meets the flat surface the wheel sits against. Didn't notice it before, probably thought it was a weld. I think it was holding the wheel from going on perfectly flush, and causing the vibrations.
I chipped it off with a large flathead and a hammer, sanded it down with a wire brush as well as the inner diameter of the wheel and the covered the mating surfaces in grease. My god, the wheel goes on/off like BUTTER now! I'll be checking on this at least twice a year now, because those wheels get stuck on there like crazy. Pain in the ass. |
