OT: M6 (Toll) - Police Clampdown

OT: A Bugatti Veyron.....

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

..... followed me for about 10 miles southbound on the M6 this afternoon.

He (or she) kept about a five car gap behind me and didn't go much above
Quote:
the national speed limit right up until we got onto the toll road.

He (or she) was never aggressive or made any attempt to overtake....

Right up until the point where the traffic thinned as we got on the toll....

Again, without getting any closer and without any agression, he (or she) politely flashed his (or her) lights - just the once....

Although I was - perhaps - creeping towards braking the speed limit at this point, I felt that pulling into the middle lane was the polite thing to do, given the circumstances....

O.M.G.

I want one!
The above quote from Boo34's thread on the Veyron reminded me to warn you guys that the police are clamping down on speeding on the M6 toll. Last Saturday they had a camera on the bridge at Weeford services with no fewer than 5 police cars and their targets stopped on the hardshoulder Northbound between the services and the main toll plaza.

On Sunday, got on at Junction 6 and an unmarked 07 plate black Volvo S60 was lurking on the slip road out of sight of main carriageway. A few seconds later it flew past to get some guy in an Astra estate.

There are also a couple of banners around warning of a clampdown (roundabout under junction 2 of M54)

You have been warned!

The services on the M6 toll are called 'Norton Canes' is that the same as 'Weeford'?

I'm not happy about cameras on the bridge .. that's bloody sneaky on the toll.

I have noticed that they lie in wait for people that pull away from the toll booths quickly ... I'm regularly followed out of there.

I agree ... problem is it's not exactly legal on the M6 toll, because there is a 50mph limit for the first few hundred yards.

Still can't resist a quick redline in first and second though.

I thought I'd been caught on Saturday by the bloke on the bridge - then I saw two unlucky people had been pulled over.

Do you think the camera was just to alert the mobile units? It was just a couple of plod on the bridge - no van or anything...

I'd slowed down a bit but - as always - it was more or less empty and it is tempting eh!

You think i've got away with it?

This just illustrates the stupidity and irrelevance of the current approach to speeding.

I recommend that everyone should have a look at the following site, which asks some very sensible questions about the reasons for the 'war on speeding':

http://www.safespeed.org.uk/

The author of the site is absolutely correct. Rigid and draconian enforcement of speed limits stops drivers from learning to moderate their speed to a level appropriate to the road conditions and distracts them from safe driving.

How many times have you had to slam on the brakes because someone in front of you does an emergency stop when they see a speed camera? Because they are not necessarily aware of their speed they typically slow down to much ... to say 60mph in a 70mph area.

The M6 toll is a very well built and very quiet road. In general in a modern car speeds in excess of 70mph are absolutely safe and appropriate for the road conditions on the toll.

There are plenty of places where people drive at speeds which are not appropriate. Quite often this is within prescribed limits. That's where the police should be concentrating.

Prosecuting people for doing 90mph on the toll is pointless.

If the mobiles were pulling people over you will probably be OK. You need to wait 2 weeks to be certain and the current postal strike is your friend

If you have been done and the NIP doesn't arrive on time - even if it's because of the strike, then any proceedings are void.

remember it's 14 working days, +1 to be on the safe side.

SJ - who's now free to elaborate on his exciting tour through Richmond, with an involuntary Police escort.

It's just 14 calender days isn't it? Nothing I have read says 'working days' and '14 working days' makes no sense anyway.

I'll bet they'd put the postal strike to work to their advantage to claim that they should be allowed more time to contact you.

There was a legal chappy on the news yesterday who felt that the strike would work to the drivers advantage.

However, the law regarding postage is usually that the document is deemed to be received the day after posting, provided their is evidence that it was posted first class (usually given under oath).
