Thermostat opening for oil cooler

So my 2007 had the oil cooler installed, and it would always range from about 240-250 on a really hot day when driving a little aggressively.

On the new car I am getting, 2010 xi, there is no oil cooler. I am a bit concerned at this, but from what I have read the stock oil cooler the 335 comes with opens at 240? If this is the case, then it seems having one or not having one really doesn't make much of a difference at all unless tracking I suppose.

Yes yes and yes, I have read all the threads on oil coolers, this is not a repeat. I am asking at what temp the factory one kicks in at, to simply see if it's worth me pushing for an oil cooler from BMW or not.

Thanks.

After watching quite a few 0-60 pulls on youtube, it seems almost every car is around the 250 mark, and I'm sure some of them do and do not have oil coolers. If the factory oil cooler basically just there to prevent the car from going into limp mode? It obviously isn't kicking in before 240-250, so it seems for me to press BMW for an oil cooler wouldn't really make a difference unless I am seeing 250+?

Again, please no negative comments, this specific topic has not been discussed, and if it has, I missed it then.

Everyone has their own opinion abut the subject.
At the end, if you are not tracking your car and you are not a 17 year old boy who just got your driving license, then you can leave without an oil cooler.

Mine does not have one. I custom made one but removed it two weeks later because the car would take too long to warm up.

Unless you added an oil cooler AND removed (or disabled) the thermostat, that makes no sense.

I believe mine opens at 220F. In the summer I run 235-250 bit in the winter 220 all day long.

The thermostat opens around 220-230. You can remove the thermostat and allow oil to flow to the cooler all the time but as mentioned above it will take longer for the oil to warm up. I thought a company made a 180 degree t-stat? Thinking it was Stett but maybe it was specifically for their aftermarket oil cooler.

Mine usually hits 240 in summer with no oil cooler, only if it's really hot will it get to 250. If just a tune and not tracking, do you think I should press the dealer for oil cooler?

There is no thermostat to remove/disable on a non oil cooler car because it doesn't not come with one.

I installed an external thermostat 180F which is what all aftermarket kits come with. It was all good up to 180F, but once it opens, good luck getting it to go over 210F.

Personal preference, I like it to be at 230F.

Please excuse my brain fart! You're quite right.

I'll blame it on inadequate caffeination.

EDIT: On re-read, what I wrote almost did make sense! I was responding to your having removed the oil cooler because it took the car too long to warm up. If you had a thermostat installed (a critical component on a street driven car that has an oil cooler), the addition of an oil cooler should have little effect on warm-up time.

I would assume when it comes to a tune, having the oil cooler vs not having the oil cooler would not make a difference when you are just normal driving. If your car does not have an oil cooler and you are just driving normal, it will see no more stress or oil temp rise between stock and tune, right?

If you think you got a chance at bugging them for an upgraded part like a oil cooler, why not at least give it a shot??

I might lol. I would probably have to wait til summer as the oil temp isn't gonna get very high in the middle lf winter. It seems though that the OEM one really doesn't do much anyway though
