Questions for those with Injector/DDE Issues

I haven't seen a post specific to these questions, but I was wondering out of all of you having the injector/DDE SES codes, what model year is your 335d? I'm interested to see if this is happening more on one model year versus the others.

Also maybe list the mileage the Injector Code first showed up, your driving style, and HWY vs City driving that you do.

If over 50k miles, do you have extended warranty and was it covered under the EW? Maybe even list the EW plan that you purchased.

If the problem has been corrected, what was the last service you had that you feel resolved the problem thus far?

Just trying to get all of this information in one thread for others who might come upon these issues. I will be purchasing a 2011 335d M-Sport in the next week. The car currently has 49k miles, so I assume I am going to encounter these issues eventually. I will most likely purchase the Gold Plan EW 7yr/100k to hopefully cover any of these issues. From speaking with the seller, it seems as though he has been aware of these issues and has driven the car like it likes to be driven. Hopefully this has helped keep the carbon build up issues down.

Ses light

I have a 2010 335d. My light first went off at 32k and the injector 4 was changed. I bought the car last feb with 37k and the light went off within 2 weeks. I now have 45k and it has been in the shops 7 times this year, total out of service time of over 70 days. They replaced the injectors numerous times, replaced the turbo, sent head & intake out for carbon cleaning, replaced the injectors again after the carbon a few times. Last time it was at the shop was 3 weeks ago, and they finally replaced the dde. No problems since, but it's only been 3 weeks.

Mine is a 2010, got the initial SES at about 38k miles. Got the head, injectors, DDE, etc.. replaced. This was winter 2011-2012.

I now have 69k miles on it and no problems since then. Fingers crossed that I'm not 'due' for another cleaning.

Thanks for the info guys. Looks like this forum is fairly slow. Not too many responses, though I've seen numerous members with one of these issues. Maybe some aren't as active any more or moved on from the 335d. I just thought this thread would be a good idea for those either approaching the dreaded 50k or those that might be interested in purchasing a 335D. Guess I'll wait to see if any others chime in.

AFAIK, this is the 2nd most active diesel BMW forum. The other is on bimmerfest; some of the same people. A little different dynamic, of course. IIRC, there were a couple pretty substantial threads on injectors, but most of the recent posting has been on egr/carbon buildup.

BTW, I'm at 73K miles, had one injector have a zero-adaptation problem very early, have had nothing but SCR problems since.

Keep in mind that the DDE has undergone various revisions so I'm not sure that the sample size on these forums is large enough to determine who had what version.

In addition the extended warranty will cover the DDE and injectors. It will not cover wear items such as belts, hoses, bulbs.

Puerto Rican 335d, what year is your 335d? The one I'm working on purchasing had the B13 04 12 programming, which i believe is the was some sort of DDE programing, done around 41k miles. I've check with my local SA and he says that they DDE has not been replaced in this car. I'm wondering if I can convince them to change it without having thrown any codes.....

Good to hear Rican. Glad the 2011 seems to be going strong for you. The one I'm looking to purchase was built 07/11 so it seems to be mid model year.

btw, a little off topic, but does anyone have a good DIY for changing the oil in the 335d? I found one, but all of the images were broken. I hope to be able to do the oil change myself if I can find a guide on how to do it. Diesels are new to me, so I want to make sure I dont miss something.

First BMW? The OC is easy and just like any BMW which has an oil canister. Just make sure to buy an appropriate sized tool to remove the oil cap (no strap wrench!). The tool can be bought anywhere.

7.7 quarts of oil (some taken a little more (red dipstick).

So, any e9x DIY will tell you how. The oil/filter are different however.

It is the end of the production. I don't believe there were any built after 7-8/11

Something I definitely didnt know. No wonder they are so hard to find!

Thanks for the info on the oil change SoCom. Yes, this is both my first BMW and my first Diesel, so everything is going to be new to me. I definitely looking forward to it and just found out that the seller is available this Sunday! Looks like i will be joining the 335d club in 2 days! Can't wait! Even with the issues, I plan to buy the extended warranty *just in case*.

Mine is early Sep 2011 built. 14k now, all recalls done. Going strong so far.
Mpg has significantly decreased after last update, but my priority has always been pleasure to drive over fuel efficiency.

I agree with the decrease in mpg but I have a crappy daily commute so it doesn't matter. At least I average almost 40mpg in the mornings (6am) driving hard in DS mode!

The issue being discussed here that the injectors really are not bad, it's a failure within the DDE computer that declares there is a bad injector. For this problem there are typically no symptoms except a check engine light.

People go though multiple injector replacements which stops once the DDE is replaced.

For your loss of power and change in sound, it may be one or more bad injectors or a fuel delivery problem. Or could be almost anything.

Thanks for your response. I took it to a garage, they said its my nr.4 injector. But I don't trust them they also said my tensioner pulley was faulty and I replaced all the pulleys the previous week. Can a BMW garage check the injectors' condition on their computer?
