55k Miles Service?
Just surpassed 55,000 miles.. No warranty. Have had the car for about 6 months... No trouble so far..
Did an oil change at 53k... Other than that should I be doing anything else.. Does anyone have a service log manual of what needs to be checked and/or done at certain times? Thanks! |

What year is your car? I would do this if it has not been done:
-valve cleaning - definitely needed -brake fluid I'd start thinking about doing the following soon, maybe another 10-15k miles if your a 2010, or much sooner if your an '07 or '08 -trans fluid, if manual -rear diff fluid -coolant -power steering fluid Also, if your tuned and never replaced, you can proactively do all 6 spark plugs if never replaced, or you can wait until they start misfiring and address one at a time - depends on how you prefer to maintain your vehicle.

Around 50K is a great time to consider long-term upkeep, by that I’m mainly talking about fluids. Of course, try to determine what has already been done so not to replicate your effots. But for reference, at 50-53K I’ve done the following to the E88. E90 I’ll do the same for when the time comes, it’s bone stock so not quite as worried on that car.
-Switched to OCIs of no longer than 5K, ideally will do it every 3K. -Swapped diff fluid -Swapped power steering fluid -Swapped brake fluid (did full brake job, replaced all hardware, lines, sensors, etc) -Replaced stock LPFP -Walnut blasting -Full AT service with Redline D4 (pan, gasket, mech sleeve, fluid) -Swapped all 6 coils -Plugs Largely the above is for peace of mind, but it’s good to know you have fresh fluids in the car with the exception of coolant, which I don’t feel needs to be swapped at an arbitrary mileage. I’m the second owner of the E88 so now I know with total confidence that all fluids are clean and of high quality. It’s not fun to pay for but the alternative could be a fried clutch pack, smoked diff, valvetrain issues, etc.

The Mike Miller schedule is probably the best standardized program out there. Now that I'm out of warranty, that's what I follow. BMW will tell you oil change every 15k, and that you'll never need to change tranny fluid. If you intend to own the car past the maintenance plan, that's all bogus.
Mike doesn't like the plan posted on line (it's copyrighted), but you'll find the PDF via google. It's not a super big secret, as it's effectively the E30 BMW schedule (before BMW started picking up the tab for maintenance, they reccomended a lot more - shocker) Both are available online, though admittedly, Mike has a lot of nice commentary and added information for each item (it's not a simple list). In short it suggests: Spark Plugs: every 15k-30k Air filter: every 15k - 30k Interior filter: 15k-30k Fuel filter: 60k Coolant Flush every 2 years Coolant & fuel lines ever 150k Tstat/Water Pump: every 60k (this is a good preventative item) Power Steering fluid: every 30k Manual Tranny Fluid: every 30k ATF: every 60k Xfer case: every 30k Diff fluid: every 30k Brake fluid: every year (seems excessive to me) Oil's up to you. Most people agree 3k intervals are too frequent, and plenty of oil studies prove that. But 15k is too much. Even with the benefit of modern synthetics, the filter technology has not advanced as well. I stick to 5k- 7500. |
