Not performing up to par: potential problem?

A little while back, I did a few pulls with a friend who has a GTI (mods listed below), on his stock map. There was about 600lbs of passengers in my 335i, and there was about 450lbs of passengers in his GTI. From about 30 in second, both cars got on the gas at the same time, and his GTI started to pull, but when my friend shifted his car, it lost about 1/3 of a car length, then pulled back the distance and was pulling, not hard, but definitively pulling on my car until both cars let off at about 85-90. I was very surprised how well his car did compared to my friend's GTI. Even my friend was surprised as he had always felt like my car was a good deal faster than his. He then did a pull with me with his car in stage two, and about 450lbs of passengers in my 335i and 550lbs of passengers in my friend's GTI, and he walked me by about 2 car lengths over the same race.
My friend then told me that he did a few pulls with another friend the other night in his X5 (xDrive35i). He was on stock map with only drivers in each car. He said the X5 pulled slightly on him and then the distance was constant.
I feel like my 335i should be faster than him, despite his modifications. When on stock map, his car essentially performs as a stock GTI. Should a stock GTI ever beat a stock 335i? Is there something that needs attention?
His mods: intake, catback exhaust, catless downpipe, and tune.
I have no mods.
Both cars are 6MT.

A tune would be great, but I can't get one at this time. Should his car really be that much faster? Is there anything potentially wrong mechanically?

Makes sense to me to be honest. They are geared shorter and in small sprints they move pretty good. With those mods he will trap over 100 no problem. I'm sure closer to 105mph with their strong midrange also.

His car is not stock and is lighter.. you need a tune. Yes there is a chance maybe your car has boost leak or something else tho.

Does the car exhibit any symptoms for boost leak? What can I check for?

Check the IQ valve under the seat. It is usually the problem when street racing a stock car.

Sometimes you can hear if your car is leaking boost and since you are stock you should notice any abnormal sounds from the engine bay as you would not be hearing much if any turbo noise with stock dp's/exhaust/intake, etc. Do you have a diagnostics tool like the Bavarian Technic cable? You can then log to see if hitting boost targets and scan your car for codes. With boost leak sometimes no codes (30ff) thrown so you need to do a pressure test for that.. hope this helps.

Under the seat or behind the steering wheel?

When I uninstalled my cobb because of misfires I feel like my car is slow as hell(and possibly injectors :/) , It doesnt have that pull I used to feel when i first bought the car but then again i was probably used to cobb. My car no longer misfires on stock tune, no codes show. You think a data log will show if my injectors are running good? i just had then replaced under warranty 10k miles ago is it possible they are already done?

wtf^ why dont you fix your misfires instead of uninstalling tune. That makes no sense.

and no a stock gti shouldnt beat a stock 335i. It might have a better chance from a roll, but even then 335i should pull stock for stock. Not by much though.

Not stock from OP

You can't roll up to a turbo car running high boost and beat it stock. I bet a Juke running 22psi would give a stock 335 a run and that is just sad.

idk he may have just added that but i was answering his question

Should a stock GTI ever beat a stock 335i?

But with I/E/downpipe and tune GTI will probably be faster then a stock 335i. Remember its not about HP, its about power/weight ratio. upgrade the turbos and it will keep up with a tuned 335i

I wasn't criticizing you. As for added after I remember reading it yesterday but it is pretty buried. I agree power to weight is huge and some GTI Mark IV's are monsters. Anyway back to him needing to check his IQ valve. Now that I think about it I do think that some models have it under the dash behind the glove box.

Not a good comparison at all, way too many variables. There's no way to tell if your car is mechanically up to par because of a lost race. Codes/scans/etc are the way to go in terms of that.

He's got quite a bit mods against your stock 335i

6MT so one driver could be better at shifting or vice versa. one driver could have just had a bad launch/roll

try racing without passengers/guessing the extra weight. any added weight considerably changes things

go to a strip and do a real test. but buy a tune first!

Hate to beat the horse but... tune then log, tweek log again, grin and blow the doors off that gti... Some mods would obviously help. I recommend bms dci's($100) and a vrsf cp with bov which is also pretty cheap. Mix those with a tune you can afford and you should pull pretty hard. You'd be surprised how efficiently our cars make power with a few mods and a good tune
