I've got the same question. Just purchased my first BMW, a 2009 328xi, and wanted to know what are some of the things I should keep a special eye out for before the warranty ends. Have about 9 months left on it.

If it were me, I'd drop the splashguard and inspect for oil - if you find any, make them replace the valve cover gasket and/or OFHG. Also, if you have an automatic, inspect the valvetronic sleeve for leaks.

My tech advised I replace the A/C evaporator even though it was good so I went ahead and got that done. In addition to that what the others have mentioned in the above comments as well.

I like this idea. Good investment unless it comes out clean well then you're just lucky.

I don't understand this topic at all. The question was "what do I need to get done" as if the warranty is some sort of voucher for a once over before its expires. If something needs fixing get it fixed. If not go about your business as usual. Anything that is not obviously broke a dealer can easily say its working fine or "normal". |

I understand your point stanlalee. But speaking as someone who has had several $thousand worth of work done a few hundred miles after the warranty expired, it would have paid off if I insisted that they at least inspect the car before it expired.
Ironically, I asked them if they do any type of end of warranty inspection and they looked at me like I was crazy. They replied "you think we're going to look for work to do for free?" I replied, what's it matter to you if it is free for me. You're the one getting paid for it by BMW. And paid they got... by me once I was out of warrranty. My current local dealer; however, actually asked me if I wanted one without me even bringing it up. Of course, that could be because they were just slow. Btw, my friend did just have to get the valve cover gasket and the muffler replaced in his 2010 335. |

On a 328 oil leaks
On a 328 oil leaks due to broken head or valve cover bolts.
Have someone inspect all the head and valve cover bolts for broken heads and or leaks in the same area. You need to remove the cover on the engine to inspect for the ones next to the spark plugs on the valve cover as they cannot be seen with the cover on. One of the common problems is for there to be leaks on the Inner portion of the valve cover that are not detected until somebody goes to change the spark plugs. Oil leaks around the Oil Filter Housing are common to all BMW's I think. Get your last free once a year oil change . The one you are suppose to get every year regardless of mileage. |

Awesome suggestions. Thanks all! I've got a mechanic buddy (don't we all) and I like the idea of having him run through all of the areas you've highlighted before taking the car into the dealer. My dealer also never told me about a free oil change once a year. Gonna have to ask about that one

The free oil change once a year is in the warranty
The free oil change once a year is in the warranty
manual. They tend to not tell you about it or they don't understand it either but it clearly states computer recall or once a year. Or it used to . Also if you are keeping the car long term you may want to get all the lifetime fluids changed but it will have to be at your expense. You should google Mike Miller BMW for the old school maintenance schedule. |

It's hard to identify things to preemptively fix that are not a problem, nor will BMW fix it under warranty if it is not a problem.
Generally your car will throw codes if there's a problem. That's a start. check for codes. Also 335 are notorious for oil leaks. Valve cover gasket and oil filter housing gaskets leak on almost every single 335i eventually over time. Check for those. See if you can get a fresh set of plugs. Waterpump and thermostats typically go out anywhere from 50k miles to 100+. Mine went at 60k miles. BMW won't change unless either are dying/dead/throwing codes. You are lucky they covered your seat wear and tear. I like my dealership and they wouldn't fix my lumbar button under warranty because they said I kicked it. GL getting additional warranty services |
