Spacer size on 18x8.5 (non-staggered) set up?
Hi,
I'm looking at buying some aftermarket rims and tires for my 2006 330i (E90), and I'm trying to figure out the offsets, and whether or not I need spacers. I have the non-sports package 330, with 17 inch rims as standard. I'm upgrading to an 18"x8.5" rim with a 40mm offset. I'm doing a non-staggered set up so I can rotate my tires. My question is what kind of spacers I need for the rear. I want to make sure there is no rubbing. I was thinking that 10mm will be enough to avoid the tucked in look without any risk of rubbing, or should I go for 15mm? Would it be any different if I go for 19's instead of 18s? Do I also need spacers on the fronts or will the 40mm offset be OK with no risk of rubbing? Finally, what brand of spacer should I go for? I want to make sure that all the lug nuts match. Thanks in advance for your help. Matt. |

On Tire Rack all the wheels have a 40mm that fit the E90, so I am confused about your comment on waiting for the "wheels that are meant for my vehicle". Basically, that would mean not changing from anything other than a factory wheel that ships on the E90. Anyone else care to provide some input? I'd like to order my rims, tires and spacers this morning. Thanks! |

Matt, 18" and 19" has no effect on offset, so no worries there. For the rears, with an 8.5" rim, 10, 12 or 20mm would work. If you lower the car and are worried about rubbing, 12mm would be fine. For the fronts, it says you get 12mm less room on the inside, you may need spacers, but if you do, only 5 or 10mm. H&R, Eibach and Rogue all make spacers. Rogue gets there bolts from Tirerack. They use silver bolts. So if you get spacers for the the rear only from them, you will have black and silver going on. Danny

Also, one more question for you. Would you go for 18s with a good tire (Pirelli PZero Nero M&S) or 19s with a cheaper tire (Kumho SPT). I'm trying to decide... Other than the Pirelli, is there any other tire in that price range that you'd recommend? I like it because its uni-directional, all-season and has good all-round ratings. Thanks, Matt. |

It's safe to assume that a 19x8.5, +40 will be no different offset wise to a 18x8.5. +40. For me, your second question is hard to answer. 18" or 19" is totally a personal perference. IMHO, if the quality of the wheels are not as good as stock, 19" will hurt more than help, if your into performance that is. With 19's it's importmant to me that it is a lightweight and strong because your adding rotational mass and resistance to your car and because there is little less tire protection from pot holes with 19's compared to 18's. For tires, I always go with the best I can afford to spend. That is going to be a major contributer to how your car rides and feels on the blacktop. Danny

I think the problem here relates to width. A 8.5" rim with +40 or whatever is much different than a 9.5 with the same offset. The M3's +22 is on a 9.5 rear.
