Transmission question video inside
I had another thread on this but I figured I would make a video so you guys could see exactly what I'm talking about. This is cold start and going uphill. The shift from 1st to 2nd seemed okay but then the shift from 2nd to 3rd seemed like it took longer and was a little "jerky". You can see what I mean in the video. My 335 is auto and has 40k miles on it.

The only thing that I can think is that it is shifting at very low revs for a cold engine. Does this jerkiness continue once the engine is up to temperature and at higher revs? Well, 2500 rpm is actually not too bad, but it depends on the load and throttle position - it seems as though you are pulling of very gently with the engine being cold, this might also be an influence.

For a cold engine I would not worry about it, any engine/geabox is not necessarily going to be its best when cold, if it was misbehaving when up to normal operating temperature then I would worry. Yes, as per your other thread, driving up a hill does require more effort from the engine and therefore slightly higher revs, same as if you were just gently accelerating and then put your foot down, the gear changes would take place at higher revs while you accelerate faster.

It just seems my shift form 1st-2nd is super smooth, then from 2nd-3rd it happens a little later in the RPM's and is slightly more jerky. I think I am probably just overthinking this. Can anyone else look at the video and leave some feedback? Thanks

Well, when going up a hill the change from 1st to 2nd is a bit easier in terms of load than it is from 2nd to 3rd and this of course increases as you go into the higher gears. By that time the engine is warmer and you will be using slightly larger throttle opening allowing the engine to change with better power to work with and generally higher revs. Basically, a cold engine is nursed warm and can't really be expected to perform as perfectly smoothly as an engine up to temperature.
Also, not sure how steep and long this hill is... |

This is normal shifting on level ground. 1-2 was smooth, but it looks like 2-3 happened a little after 2k rpm and wasn't as smooth? Like there was a little surge in rpm right before it shifted? Am I imagining/being too critical? Please any feedback much appreciated thanks. |

The surge is strange (and in some cases normal), but I reckon this is between the adaptations for the engine and gearbox. And again the gear changes are at relatively low revs and throttle input which might be partially the reason for this - these engines have plenty of torque at low revs, but tractors they are not. Try this with the gearbox in DS or sport mode so that the revs are not "forced" to stay this low.
If this is really bothering you also, try and see what another similar car does and compare. I really don't think this is anything to be worried about, but then not physically being there to experience this does make it tricky to judge. |

How's the car drive now? I am searching forums and came across this. My car is shifting smooth on all gears except for 3-4 (around 35-40 mph). At low RPMs (2500-3000) shift can be felt in the seat and steering wheel (there is no slamming noise; just the gear shift can be felt more) and the RPMs jump about 200-300 rpms (so it is very subtle). This is non-existent when cold but when the transmission oil warms up I can feel and see all this.
