Cobb with PPK
Hi all,
Does anyone have experience with adding a stage 1 Cobb tune on-top of BMW's PPK stage 1 tune. I am curious if it will yield a result thats worth the time, effort and of course expense involved. Cobb is stating that I should get about another 20 horse over the PPK on 91oct. Would love feed back on drive-ability compared before and after. Can you feel a difference?. Thanks

I initially put the PPK on my car and then went the cobb route. I think the cobb tune will over write the PPK tune. I like the cobb better. More power, just my 2 cents

Thanks Rick. According to Cobb the system will save the PPK tune so if I want to uninstall the Cobb it will return my car back to the way it was with the PPK. Was it as smooth? A bit more power is what I am looking for. It would be great if the Cobb is what the PPK was to Stock.

i did this exact thing last week. have PPK installed and added cobb stage one aggressive last week. there's a bigger difference between going from PPK to Cobb; than Stock to PPK.
However i also only have 91 Octane in Utah. I have the N55 engine with Performance exhaust and aFe stage 2 intake. I'm getting mixed messages from Cobb staff though. One of their guys (who seems more knowledgeable) has checked my logs and says there fine. But one of their other guys said running aggressive map is a terrible idea on stage 1 and theres some possible knock on my logs. Again, the first guy seems more knowledgeable. One thing i would say is im going to keep logging for a while and check again in a few weeks. If i cant run the stage 1 "aggressive" map and have to go back to stage 1 "sport" theres no way its worth $850 over the PPK. Minimal gains from PPK to stage 1 sport.

Is it like what we got when we added the PPK stage 1 or much less? Is it worth the hassle? I would like at least what the PPK was to a stock 335 e90 auto.

PPK to stage 1 sport
Obviously it's a matter of opinion but based on the dynos from Cobb stage 1 sport Peak gain is +3% hp and +11%tq. So 309hp and 333tq. Max is higher. The PPK is advertised as 320hp and 332tq.
PPK 320hp/332tq Stage 1 Sport 309hp/333tq Stage 1 Aggressive 333hp/375tq So for me if you didn't have PPK (which I think is way overpriced) I'd say stage 1 sport is worth it. But not worth it given that you've got PPK. Definitely interested to hear any counter arguments though.

It getting a bit confusing, because BMW under rates the figures and the 320/332 numbers are from the crank and the others numbers are from the wheels.
I guess there is nothing better than a butt dyno for this comparison.

It might be worth switching if you would run stage 1+ sport map or stage 2+ sport map. To answer your other question ; I also installed Cobb over PPK and it is saved as my stock map. I will have PPK running if I uninstall Cobb.

Just to add another testimonial to what has already been stated several times: Coob stage 1 "sport" offers no tangible gain over the factory PPK. Feels about identical to me with the PPK being slightly stronger if I had to guess. Cobb stage 1 "aggressive" will get you some additional power but I don't think that is intended to run on 91 octane.

Stage 1 Sport+ requires a Cobb down pipe and gains are minimal over PPK.
Stage 2 Sport+ requires about $2000 in hardware upgrades! But 91 octane is fine ;-) Map details are here, and include hard and octane requirements http://www.cobbtuning.com/BMW-N55-Ac...maps/bmw/98F0B" rel="ugc" target="_blank">http://<a href="http://www.cobbtunin.../bmw/98F0B</a>" rel="ugc" target="_blank">http://<a href="http://<a href="http.../98F0B</a></a>" rel="ugc" target="_blank">http://<a href="http://<a href="http...0B</a></a></a>

I'm toying with the idea of a tune right now and think the Cobb sounds very promising for ease of install/uninstall and overall power numbers.
