Car: 2008 335 XI with iDrive
Mods: Catless downpipes, DCI, JB4 ISO5 (running map 2) Background: I got my plugs replaced a week or two ago. The car seemed to idle a little rough after the plugs were changed to the point that I went back and asked them to check things over, look for codes, etc (it was on the way to work and I went in on a whim). The found nothing and there were no stored codes. Last night I was in 4th and was wide open throttle from about 2500 RPM, I was just before 5k RPM and the car went LIMP and the engine malfunction warning came up on the dash as a yellow 1/2 engine and iDrive gave me something similar. The loss of power lasted 2-3 seconds or so and the dash returned to normal, the message went away and the car was fine. I stopped at the gas station filled up and headed home. I hook up my laptop and check for DME codes using the JB4 software but there is nothing there. The car is running fine and has not had any other symptoms. I went out today with the laptop hooked up and did a bunch of pulls on map2 and map5.... no errors, no power issues, etc. Can I upload logs here or is Berger the only source to read them? How can I have no DME codes when I got the Engine Malfunction warning message? ![]() I think people will say "bad DME" but if I don't use my 'clear codes' setting on the JB4 and run on map 0 I will get the CEL come on and get the "catless downpipes detected" message. (or at least I did before) Last edited by Canadian 335xi; 03-30-2014 at 06:28 PM.. Reason: added datazap logs |

A little vague ... no?
The setup is AWESOME. I fully recommend it... it's probably something with the plugs. Drive around stock and then do your DCI, catless and JB4 ... then try to tell me you want to re-think it. Before the plug change the car was bullet proof with NO ISSUES. Do it all... and do put some money aside in case something breaks.... but get the downpipes, DCI and JB4, you can be sure you won't regret it. |

As for map4 I didn't check that actually... because it went off so quick and I was only 5 minutes on the road to the gas station the only thing I did was say "f*ck" alot in my head. It was map 2 when I went for my drive today. I just don't understand how I can get engine malfunction with no codes? I was told that the "clear codes" only cleared tuning and downpipes type of codes and that if there was anything serious it would leave them??? Can someone confirm or deny that? |

I was reading elsewhere and found out about datazap.me... what a cool site.
![]() I would appreciate some eyes & opinions on my logs. They are also post-warning. http://www.datazap.me/u/Canadian335xi |

Only way to troubleshoot is to be able to see the codes that are being thrown. As long as you have the code clearing feature on you will not know what is going on. |

bump for a brother with a mysterious engine malfunction problem with no DME codes?
I still think the clear codes in the JB4 was to leave "important codes" but I can't find that thread.... ![]() |

I use the JB4 to clear my misfire all the time. I confim the code via hex 1,1 and clear with 1,2. If you keep 1,3 on all the time the code will throw and it will clear after a couple minutes without intervention. Some scanners can still pick it up but it has to be a quality one that can grab bmw shadow codes and history codes.

This is the one he has I think: http://burgertuning.com/scanner.html (at the bottom) I'll have to read about shadow codes and history codes, I was happily ignorant of such things.... ![]() |
