Skip, Skip, Skip

Trying to play a cd is useless. Every bump in the road, expansion strip, or crack in the pavement causes the in-dash CD player to skip. Does anyone else have this issue or is it just my unit? I know we all love the e90s for their tight suspension and would not trade it for a song played from start to finish, but really? It is painful at times, I know the run-flats are firm, but is it that? I have the logic 7 system in an '07 335i Coupe.

If this is unique to my car, is there an in-dash unit that I can install?

I have the logic 7 and live on a dirt road and have no issues with skipping. Sounds like your laser is toast . . might be easier to find a bmw cd changer and install that rather than replacing the head unit.

You need some form of USB or A2DP
If you want to get away from the downsides of a CD.
Its mechanical is the big downside.
Or you could play from a smartphone or player through the
aux line though its a low fidelity input.
Could it be the New York potholes we hear about.

Mine doesn't skip except in very extreme conditions though.

Any modern CD player reads the data from the CD disc much faster than it has to be played back to you. This ability to read ahead is used to buffer the data in player's memory and completely eliminate any possibility of skipping due to road imperfections. 15 years ago this was advertised as an advanced "anti skip" feature, today it is something every single CD player does. In other words, your CD player is not supposed to skip, unless you are driving on some sort of infinite washboard. If you observe immediate skipping due to an isolated bump on the road, it means there's some problem with your player (or with the disc) that prevents it from buffering the data. Does it happen on all CDs?

there's no downside to CD its better. The CDC in the boot on mine doesn't ever skip even where bumps are so bad you have to go back and check which wheel actually fell off !!! (which with run flats is like every 10 yards on UK roads)

Before anything else, try using a cleaning disc (the ones with the little brushes on them) and see if that helps. That has fixed problems for me on multiple different car and home disc players.

It happens all the time and the cd does not matter, meaning any and all skip. I will try to find a cleaning disc. Hope that helps. I would hate to replace the head unit. I imagine that it is not cheap (the head unit) and like anything else BMW, it will probably have to be programmed by the dealer before a replacement will work.
