Best oil viscisity for 320i ...
So it's time for my 1st oil change.
I'm going to get my local dealer to do it so that I keep the service history but supply my own oil. They only charge about £35+ for this so I rekon it's worth it. My question is this: Do I go for Mobil 1 0W-40 at £29.98 (inc) for 5 litre OR Castrol Edge 5W-30 also at £29.98 (inc) but for 4 litre? I believe both can be used in a 320i engine but am quit willing to be corrected if wrong!

mobil 1 esp and castrol edge fst are considered to be some of the best oils for LL-04 specs. I believe that you should stick with the 5w-30 or 0w-30 (for colder climates if I remember correct). a quick visit at castrol/ mobil sites will answer your questions too.
personally, I only use 5w-30 from the beginning and never waited from CBS of the vehicle's board computer to tell me when to change the oil. I always change it at about 6500-7500 miles (10000-12000 kms) also, 4 litres won't be enough. n46b20 engine will take 4.3 litres but since you say that you will do the 1st oil change now then you have the N43b20 which I think that they have the same oil capacity but please check it by yourself too.
