N54 vs N55
Hey guys, so I have searched, but i wanted some more direct answers.
I recently sold my FBO N54 e92 335xi and was hoping to find an MY2009-2010 N54 e93 but they're not easy to come by. I started looking into N55 e93s and was just wondering the potential the engine has compared to the N54. Obviously I know it won't make as much power as the N54 but what are the numbers for a FBO N55? I figured i'd post in the N55 section because you guys are probably more knowledgable on the N55 platform. Thanks in advance guys

I'll answer anyway. You should just wait and get the car you want. The N54 is SIGNIFICANTLY more powerful when maxed-out. It also has readily available aftermarket turbo options.
I flew across the country to get my second 335i and it was worth the wait/search. |

I flew across the country also to get my first and only used '07 n54 335i (from an early forum member with 38k miles) right before the n55 came out I believe. Since then I've always heard that the n54 engine is or can be more powerful than the n55 but have always wondered why that is? What makes the n54 "better" than the n55? For one thing it seems like the n55 would be easier, simpler, and cheaper to upgrade to a bigger single turbo since it's based on a single turbo setup to begin with.....why is that not the case? What's the reason that bmw used the n54 in the 1Mcoupe and 335is over the n55 when they had the choice; n54 just better stock I guess?

Twin turbo > single turbo Of course there are many other factors, but that's the main one. |

The factory twins on the N54 are capable of moving a decent amount of air where the factory single used by the N55 just isn't capable of matching that flow. Going with an aftermarket single kit means using a properly sized turbo to not just make good power but spool quickly.

Also all m cars up to now (minus the f8x m3) have never had valvetronic. I think the new M will not nearly be as easy to tune and its stock turbos are already near their limit
