JL microsub - where would you put it.
This little guy seems to have a lot of bang for the buck from it's well designed ported box made specifically for the driver. It is very small, only about 5+ inches thick. This would seemingly make a nice addition to our cars, where could we put it?

I have one. You can put it right up against back seat facing toward the trunk. The box is so thin you can't even see it back there with the trunk open. I actually have mine with the driver pointed through the ski pass. When I want more bass, I just open up the pass door.

Only problem is that the port is facing sideways, so you're missing output when you fire the driver through the ski-pass.

That is true if you don't leave a gap between the top of the box and the pass. I tried it with the driver essentially "sealed" in the pass. It sounded terrible. It produced relatively large amounts of higher bass frequencies, but no low bass. I assume that's because the frequencies produced by the port were too attenuated.
I've tried the corner loading option next to the battery cover. It certainly produces more bass there, but I've never been able to get it to sound right. It seems like it's out of phase even when polarity is reversed, or maybe there's just a freq gap between the midbass and the subs. I'm going to try some different settings this weekend. |

From a phase standpoint, ski-pass works best. Distance between midbass to listener, and sub to listener, is virtually identical. The corner install benefits more from cabin gain, but phase is off. Reversed phase works best, but is not perfect...
You can do an 8" ported box and have both the driver and port "fire" through the ski-pass. But why mess with that, when IB works so well!

What about mounted under the rear parcel shelf with the port firing forward. You could open the ski hole for more bass or keep it closed for a more subtle effect. In that position the thing would hardly be in the way.

That's a complicated solution to accommodate a cheap pre-fabbed enclosure design.

Kai isn't thinking nearly ghetto enough. Why not just tie it up there with baling twine? I don't think it matters much which way the port is facing. It's all nondirectional at the tuning frequency anyway. I've had dozens of ported enclosures over the years and could tell no difference in sound based on port direction.

Yea! But in all seriousness I think this would actually be ok, and not too difficult to just mount to the metal under the parcel shelf in the trunk with some sheet metal screws. It would be out of the way at only 5 in thick, and if the port could be pointed in any direction just point to the side and it should fit like a charm. Could be the answer for us more mature guys who want a little deeper sound without being heard a block away!
The only thing I might be worried about would be possible irritating vibration of the parcel shelf. |
