Exactly. I'd highly recommend getting yourself a decent ODB cable (I have the OneStopElectronics one for $99) and then you have the freedom to flash, code and diagnose to your hearts content.

Once you have WinKFP setup it's a 2 minute job to flash the TCU and then you just need a working installation of INPA to reset the gearbox adaptations, which is another 2 minute job.

If you mainly drive in D mode I wouldn't suggest getting the Alpina flash. The car shifts into 6th gear before you know it. On the other hand, if you enjoy driving in M mode then the Alpina flash is for you. Seems to me like you should just stay OEM though since you're a D driver.

Due to the fact D changes up gear earlier, am I right in assuming it would be best suited for mapped cars with increased low down torque? I mainly drive in D but I'm quite interested to give it a go!

Yeah exactly. The map was developed for the more powerful B3 car and as such is better suited to remapped cars with increased low down torque.

Saying that though when I had the Cobb installed I still found I didn't like the sound generated by the constant up-changes. If you imagine the car gets to 2k RPM, shifts to 2nd, shifts to 3rd, shifts to 4th etc etc, all at around 2k RPM. It makes the car sound very un-sporty as there isn't any real increase in revs before a gear change. It's only when you reach 40MPH and 6th gear that the revs really start rising.

It may not bother some people, but I found it quite embarrassing, especially as this constant 2k RPM noise was only made more obvious through my PE.

Agreed in D it can sound a little strange as the engine note hardly changes if not pushing on. As for drivability on an unmapped car, I have no issues.
Four months on and I have no wish to go back.
The only way is to try it.

As I have a Bastuck exhaust I would probably have the same findings!
