New Mercedes Inline Engines?

While discussing a revised G -Wagon, an automotive publication stated:

The engine range will include the new 3.0-liter, inline-six-cylinder gasoline (codenamed M256) and diesel (OM656) units currently under development ahead of their debut in the new E-class due out in 2016. For the G-class, a gasoline unit with more than 360 bhp and a diesel producing over 300 bhp are being touted.

See: http://www.autoweek.com/article/2014...news/140509978

Does this mean that Daimler is returning to the inline configuration for other applications? Is seems unlikely than a motor would be developed for such a low production unit like the G. Or did the publication just get it wrong on configuration?

Chances are they will use this modular engine group in various iterations from inline 3 to inline 6. It sounds like a good plan and less complex than doing a V6.

Interesting. I thought the configuration had been abandoned by everyone except BMW for packaging reasons.
