Plasti dip trim
Anyone have expeirence with this? I just bought two cans of plasti dip. Was wondering if anyone has any pointers or may be able to even assist me? I wanted to do the chrome outer trim. I've heard many doing this. Thanks!

Spray in thick layers or you'll have hell of a time when you decide to rip them off. I made mistake of spraying in light layers and when i went to rip them off to wrap it with vinly it came off in little pieces size of my fingernail

Its quite easy. Newspaper/tape off most of the car since it will be a mess dealing with the overspray.. I wouldn't bother pulling off the trim already on the door, but the top piece plucks out pretty easy (don't be afraid to use a little force)
A said above thick even coats and make sure its nice and warm when you do it. |

Just fyi, I had mine plastidipped and looked like crap after a bit. Ripped it off and wrapped it. Looks so much better. But hey you already bought the spray so might as well try it.

To both, how long has this plasti dip lasted? Does it do well after car washes and harsh winters ? Or is this something that needs to be re painted after a while. I want to do vinyl but I can't find anyone in my area to do this. Or I would do vinyl 100%

You wrapped it yourself? Was this difficult? Do you think I should attempt to wrap it myself rather then spraying it?

i gave it a few weeks before taking it into a wash so it could cure. i've had mine on for several months 0 issues. i wouldn't waste your time with vinyl. i found it less durable and much more of a hassle. |

If you can return can, I say wrap it. It'll look so much better. It wasn't that hard but you need patience as you'll need to heat the wrap and stretch to get it around the bends. There's one part I actually need to redo as I rushed it because it was my last part and there are some bunching on the bends.

Wrapping the trim yourself isn't that hard you should give it a shot. It just takes a looooong time to do. I think it took like 3 hours to do mine and its still holding up fine to this day after like 1.5 years. Last edited by moonsin; 05-07-2014 at 05:29 PM.. |

if you manage to do it wrong it'll look like poop no doubt. if you want a matte black window trim i dont see the sense in spending the time wrapping it at least first.. the vinyls in my experience chip worse over time.. (used shadowline). they look great until then and its a pain wrapping and getting out any creases when wrapping and also removing the vinyl.. if you don't like the plastidip look thats fine you bought 2 cans you are out $10 bucks and can peel the damn thing off and start over or move on. if you don't like how the vinyl came out or choose to remove it down the road its a pain and iirc you can't vinyl the bottom trim without actually removing the trim.
in my opinion try the plastidip first and if you really don't like it go for he vinyl.. I did it in the opposite order thinking plastidip would be tacky and it actually looks better to me and when/if I do get chips I can easily mend the dip or respray vs removing and rewrapping.. Maybe its just the color of my car, but I was much happier with the plastidip result. |

I did this on my Maxima before i got the bimmer. I sprayed multiple coats, probably like 8. Peeled it off and for like the next month i would use black spray wax on it and it developed and nice even sheen. Came out great.
