My 2006 m3 SMG cog light has been on for a while, works fine but I checked with a great indy up here in NorCal and they estimated around $3,400 for a new SMG pump unit installed.

Zero issues with my DCT. It's not "jerky" at all.
Don't know a thing about the SMG in the E46 though.

Comments about DCT being jerky, comments about SMG and it's issues in terms of replacing the entire transmission as well as the cost of replacement of the pump.
Let's just say it's best to do your own homework and due diligence. PS: keep in mind the SMG unit in a E46 M3 is not the same iteration as the one seen in the E60 M5/E63 M6. |

Replace the SMG relay first (salmon colored) don't just assume it's the pump, or let any assume for you. |

I have and it still came on. Codes were read and there was something about loss of pressure or something etc, 3 different codes came out. At this point though, it shifts fine and doesn't seem like there are any real issues so I will drive it until it grenades and then swap to a 6mt |

I would have it looked at, tbh. Many people have had success after a software update, especially on the early build 135i DCT

I liked my SMG... more than DCT or S-Tronic. I don't race my cars and use them for enjoyment and daily driving... well sometimes. I preferred SMG because it sounded like manual... it had that "breath" when changing gears and I liked it. DCT and S-Tronic is like automatic... My 2 cents only.

yup...my salmon relay went out and left me stranded in a parking lot. i know better now...i carry a spare in the glove box. but as previously mentioned...the pump going out is the main issue...other than that i love driving the smg around.
