Are 5in FMICs even worth it?
I bought the VRSF 5in a few months back i been enjoying COBB stage 1+ sport. I live in cali i only have have access to 91 octane ;/ the car pulled really nice. recently i wanted to do some logs and see how things were. Had COBB look over them and they told me that the map was too aggressive for my car and asked if i even upgraded the intercooler. i downgraded to the drive+ and they still told me my car had too many timing corrections. now I'm on stage 1 drive and i really don't feel like its worth it. my car is hitting like 17PSI but not moving like it used to. i know the weather has been hot lately but i really don't know.
my options are; either upgrade to the 7in or have PTF tune my car and maybe juice some power out of it. it could just be bad gas quality. i always fill at chevron or shell. what are some experiences or advice you can share for me? Im currently running DCI and the FMIC. next mod is a DP |

I'm curious too. And I'm in AZ. It was triple digits out here today. Wondering if I should even bother with a 5" core. Really don't want to cut stuff to make the 7" fit but this post has me thinking I should.
Question though. Would getting an aftermarket DP help with the timing corrections? |

You can find out for yourself. You have a Cobb so log IAT's. For example this is what I know about my car with tune only and drop in filter (stock intercooler):
IATs after car is up to temp are consistently 20F above ambient IATs consistently rise 30F by 6500rpm on a single 3rd gear pull With that I get no timing corrections on cool days (below 75 deg) reaching 12 deg of advance at redline (7000rpm) On warm/hot days I start getting corrections above 5700rpm where I reach 9 deg of advance and never reach much more advance. Having seen some of Cobbs OTS maps I find it hard to believe any intercooler UPGRADE (read assuming its actually an upgrade/cools better than stock) is not sufficient for their maps/hardware suggestions. First I would look at timing logs myself and not take their word for it (anybody can look at a log and see if timing takes dips or dives as RPM climbs during a WOT run). Then I'd suspect octane. Even if the intercooler was smallish it should hold up for a single pull. How hard did they test it to come to that conclusion? If it holds up consistently for one pull I wouldn't downgrade the map. You probably only let her rip every once in a while in real world situations unless racecar or jackass driver. Only if you get corrections on the first pull (or racecar or jackass driver) would I downgrade the map. Whatever the case you can figure out easily how effective your intercooler is by logging 3rd gear pulls of IATs with your Cobb. If your intake temps remain relatively controlled and timing still drops look elsewhere (octane). Your in California with the crappy gas, I would suspect that first. |

BTW I don't know if the 5" are worth it beyond ETS (know its worth it. Plenty of data). Hope OP logs and lets us know if the VRSF 5" is. |
