Buckled alloy wheel question.....

Seeking a little advice here please folks.

To cut a long story short, back in December I got 2 new rear tyres put on. All well and good until I got onto the motorway at which point I could feel some vibration from the back of the car. Didn't have the time or inclination (in hindsight a massive mistake) to go back to the garage at a later date and challenge them on it. So I just been living with it since.

Had some other work done on it at BMW back in February. I asked them to have a look at the wheel in question and they confirmed it was buckled (took 50g to balance which I'm told is quite a lot). Their re-balancing helped but wasn't perfect.

Then I decided to have all four wheels refurbished and get the buckled alloy sorted at the same time. Had them done today and was told by the company that did them that the buckled alloy was a simple fix. 10 mins later I get onto the motorway to drive home and its clear straight away that the vibrating is considerably worse! Needless to say I'm disappointed.

I'm wondering if anything else could be to blame for the vibration at motorway speeds aside from a buckled alloy?? I don't doubt that the buckle has been repaired successfully so I'm confused as to why I'm still experiencing the vibrating.

Any thoughts appreciated. Cheers guys.

On a side note, the refurbished wheels look great!

Did you get the wheel rebalanced after it was repaired? Either way I'd take it to a shop that does roadforce balancing.

So, the vibration didn't occur until AFTER you got new tires? If so, it could very well be a bad tire(s). Either way, a Road Force balance will get you pointed in the right direction.

Thanks guys. Quite short sightedly, I hadn't thought about the possibility of it being a problem with the tyre. Yes it was rebalanced after it was repaired.

The vibration issues started as soon as I got new tyres fitted. This would point to a problem with the tyre. However, to confuse the matter, both a BMW dealership and the alloy wheel repair company who refurbished them yesterday, confirmed that the alloy wheel in question was buckled. They subsequently repaired it so in theory it should be vibration free now.

Is it possible that the garage that fitted the new tyres back in December could have buckled the wheel in the process?

Doubtful.

Aside from that, vibration *could* come as a result of a bent wheel, but it would really have to depend on how bad the bend is. I guarantee you that most people's wheels (especially those who've had run flats) don't have perfectly straight wheels either.

Regardless, I'm bettering it's a tire issue. Been there/done that.

Depending on how many miles are on the tire, it may have made it oval/misshapen.

Take your wheels and tires to a shop that has a Hunter Road Force Balancer. They will be able to perform a rim runout to confirm whether the wheel is true or not, and the machine will tell you whether the tire is round. That's all there is to it really.

Just because the shop has one doesn't mean they know how to use it, make sure you find a shop where the operators are not zombies and can diagnose.
