I think you’re confusing 3 separate transmissions. In order of strongest to weakest

6MT- Just a very robust ZF box, I’m not a fan of the engagement feel, but it’s very stout. Simple clutch swap and you can hold aggressive RB power levels no problem.
6AT Steptronic- HP21/19 for the E8x and E9x, I would imagine the N54 powered E60s have the same box as well. For an auto it’s pretty robust, but you need to be smart about how you drive once you clear stock turbo power levels (really, once you get around 500wtq). If you roll into boost and can stay out of full bore launches, it will hold RB type power levels well w/ the Alpina TCU flash.
DCT- Fundamentally different than the other two boxes, no one really knows exactly what it’ll hold, but it slips well before either 6AT or 6MT get cranky. There is a clutch pack upgrade out there, doesn’t seem particularly good in my opinion, but I have no personal experience w it.

No idea how BMW approaches PPK, I’ve never looked into the boost, advance, etc.

I was going off what BMW says about the ZF a/t in the 335 vs the mt. The PPK offers less torque in the manual, and the reason given me was that the A/T is more robust and can handle more power. Apparently the same ZF automatic transmission is used in other cars where the OEM output exceeds 400tq.

I won't argue with BMW...but as a matter of plain fact, the most powerful N54s on the road are 6MT. That's just the truth, take it how you will.

This is of course the same BMW that tells you transmission fluid is a lifetime fill, oil can be swapped for 15K. So yea....

On stock clutch 6MT slips at pretty low power levels (for tuned that is), but once you put a proper clutch in, it's a beast transmission.

Truth is that the 6AT are the most powerful 335i on the road right now. Google "335i dragtimes" hotrod182, LostMarine, and Ali Abbas all 3 of them are 6AT Top 5 on the list, on RB turbos those are real facts. Lets not talk about Vish MT car because he has a big single so it's not possible to compare it.

I don't see how your statement contradicts mine.

The ST cars are without question the most powerful N54s on the road, there is no disputing that. Lostmarine, Sick335, RobC etc have/did have some very stout RB cars with 6AT, but I believe Lostmarine's trans grenaded on him. Tetty's 6AT is about to give up the ghost as well. So in terms of what transmission is best equipped to handle big power, it's the 6MT. In terms of quarter mile record it could certainly be a 6AT car, I wasn't arguing about which transmission shifted faster.

That said, stock internals are fine until you really start pushing the limit and making big power. N54 guys are making 700+hp on stock internals so *most* people have no reason to build their engine unless there is some sort of failure OR they are looking to push the limits and make huge power. Of course durability is greatly reduced when you are pushing the stock components past their intended max for obvious reasons.

Quality forged internals are designed to handle big stress (power, torque, revs, stress - you name it) :-) In order to change pistons/rods you need to fully 'rebuild' your engine for performance use. That can cost 10k+ with good components.
Think you guys can fix my N55? My motor locked from Over revving. BMW not covering it

How did you over rev your motor?
