Interesting... S5 lighter than 335xi
Found it quite interesting that the S5 V8 (which has slightly larger dimensions) is consideribly lighter! I can't believe the XI's weigh in at around 3800lbs (3759 lbs for the coupe and 3825 lbs for sedan). Audi has always been hassled for producing porkers, but damn, not this one... well, relatively speaking.
Stats are U.S. spec for the 335. Not sure the about the first S5 weight, but I know the second is euro. S5 quattro / 335xi Coupe Height: 53.9" / 54.1" Width (fender to fender): 73" / 70.2" Width (mirror to mirror): 78" / 78.1" Total Length: 182.5" / 181.1" Unladen Weight: 3594 lbs/ 3759 lbs I stole these stats from another site and they seem to check out. Discuss. And the intent of this thread isn't engine modding potential... |

one of the biggest problems of the s5 imo is the wieght distribution. its front heavy and you can feel it.

The 335XI coupe distribution is 52.8/47.2. I haven't seen official stats for the S5. I did read the A5 is near 50/50. The engine is further back (or the axles are farther forward or both?) than previous Audi models.

According to C&D testing the S5 weighs in at 3818 pounds with a F/R weight distribution of 57.7/42.3. Here are the rest of their test results.

Are there any test sheets like that for the 335xi or even 335i for that matter? |

I have not seen specific test results for the 335xi (coupe or sedan).
Unladen weight seems to be a little nebulous. From what I've read the European definition is very specific (something like one 70kg passenger, 70% filled gas tank, 7Kg luggage...). I do find it hard to believe the S5 is significantly lighter than the 335xi coupe given its dimensions and V8. |

What it looks like is the U.S. gets another bloated version from Audi. |

That's because it's not. Look at the RS4's weight, it's like 4,000 pounds. The S5 can't be that much lighter, even with the new chassis.

A little more than 200 pounds seems to be unaccounted for between EU specs and C&D testing of US model. Hmm... I suspect the C&D numbers are more realistic, giving the 335 a little advantage. Somebody posted a video of 335i vs. S5 track comparison showing 335 ahead by a slim margin at the finish (RWD 335). Difficult to extrapolate whether 335xi would fall behind due to increased weight or benefit from higher exit speeds out of the turns (some people debate the veracity of this). I find the lack of 335xi testing frustrating - why not do a direct 335x vs S5 comparison? |

Now that I think of it, I'm not surprised. For example: Euro spec S4 = 3652 lbs U.S. spec S4 = 3869 lbs That's a 217 lb difference. So, those C&D numbers seem dead on. I guess I was thinking that 3594 lb figure was U.S. and it's clearly not. My bad everyone. LOL. Well in that case, the 335XI coupe is only slightly lighter than the S5 and the 335XI sedan is still heavier. So, I was partially right. haha. |
