!! Strange Steering Wheel Shake !! Only sometimes
Dear all,
I have a really weird problem and I was hoping to find some help here. Maybe one of you has had a similar problem and perhaps has the solution. Problem 1 My car is in really good condition but has already done 100K miles but a strange problem has occurred recently which baffles me. When I drive around my steering wheel sometimes shakes mildly and then stops very often when changing direction and after some driving it can reoccur again. Problem 2 When I drive around 70 mph I can hear a sort of humming sound which seems to come from the back of my car. At 50 mph I don't notice it and at 85 mph I also seems to be gone. I drive new Michelin SuperSports on perfectly straight Alpina Classics in 19". The car has got new alignment done and roadforce balancing done twice. Recently I got a new clutch and Double Mass Flywheel and also a new Hardydisc. The strange this is that it seems as if these problems both occurred on the same time. Potential underlying problems: 1) Wheel bearings? Might be the reason for problem 2 but I cant think it would cause my steer to shake sometimes. The left rear does sound a bit when jacked up but when driving it doesn't change the pitch (if even noticeable) when changing direction. Which should be the case I guess if a bearing is worn. When jacked up it is hard to define since there are also the brakes, diff and driveshafts that could make noise. 2) Hardy disc? Nothing to see here and you would expect a new one, installed by a professional, should not be on my list of possible problems but you never know. Is there a way to check? 3) Driveshaft Bearing? Perhaps wrongly re-installed, just as the hardy disc? How to check? 4) Brakes? I read some stories on similar problems where people found out their rotors where overheating and therefore began giving the same symptoms. 5) Control arm bushing? I read this quite a lot at other topics. How to find out? Is there a test to do? They seem to look fine. 6) Differential? Could this be the cause? Perhaps for number 2. 7) Shocks? Haven't been replaced yet but could these problems come from worn out shocks??? If any of you have some tips for me? The sound and shaking is quite annoying and I keep my car in excellent shape because I love a smooth ride. The car is not under warranty anymore and therefore I just can go the stealer and says carte blanche, try to fix it. I read a lot of helpful tips here so quite possible there is somebody on the forum who can help me out. Cheers! Last edited by Vermeij; 07-16-2014 at 09:29 AM.. Reason: Additional Information |

Control arm bushings, in my experience, cause shaking during braking. For number 2, it does sound like it may be a wheel bearing. |

Unfortunately the shaking is completely random (for now) In other words I haven't found a reason just yet. Not reproducible but it will occur every time I drive. Just on different speeds after a corner or after acceleration. By the way, during braking the car is extremely stable. Also during acceleration and coasting. The steer just wobbles a bit. Could that exclude the bushings? Problem number 2 my main target is bearing right now but I can't detect any flaws as you normally could when identifying a worn bearing. |
