Thin amp for trunk sub?
Hey all,
So I'm in the process of gathering items for my audio build and I wanted some input on an issue I'm having. The car is an '09 E92. I have a Alpine MRP-M500 sitting in my garage which I figured I would use to power a single 12" sub in my trunk. I will be using a JL xd600/6 + JL C5's components for the doors/under seats. The issue is that my Apline amp is too tall for the trunk floor to sit flush. Its too high by a small amount, maybe a quarter of an inch. If you look at the pic below you will see that my mounting options are limited and to keep a clean look I really want to mount the amp within the shallow black area. There are some mini amps out there but since it's a sub I would like to keep the power in the 300-500w range or more. The obvious (but not nice looking) option would be to add a 12" box and mount the amp behind it. I want that almost stock look though. Any suggestions on what you guys have used or may think would fit would be greatly appreciated. I'm thinking it needs to be 2" or less in height to clear the floor without popping up. Thanks! |

Most digital amps are 2" or less. I know Kenwood XR-1S would work well in that spot.

Thanks for the suggestion. My Alpine is 2-3/16" but what the issue is is really the raised part in the trunk. I was considering taking a hack saw and cutting off a few of the fins on the top of my amp to make it fit. I know that sounds terrible but it may work lol.

OK, have you researched different types of subwoofer install solutions, and do you know the disadvantages of the one you're planning to do?
http://www.e90post.com/forums/showpo...2&postcount=66 Once you're sure about the type of subwoofer and enclosure, then find a matching amp. That 300W NVX will probably leave you wanting more (with a conventional sub enclosure the majority of the bass will get trapped in the trunk and converted to rattles), and watts are cheap, so why not get a real amp from the get go? http://www.salectronics.com/shopexd....Fa_m7AodvQYAew

Will that amp fit in the area where the SAT tuner is now? If you don't use SAT radio, you could remove it and place the amp there. I believe you would need to buy a MOST termination loop though. I haven't ever actually done this, so maybe someone else here has done it?

The area in question here is about 6x10x2 without cutting anything. I was alternatively thinking about mounting the amp in the corner box itself but that would be a huge pain Last edited by viperguy212; 08-08-2014 at 09:37 PM.. |

Understood. Well, another solution is to move the JL Amp to the plastic area of the trunk floor and put the Alpine in the OEM amp location. Your JL has the same dimensions as my xd 700/5, and it fits under the trunk compartment.

The XR-1S fits under the trunk floor no problem.

I used to run an XR-1S and XR-4S, both under the cover. You have to put them in at an angle, fits perfectly. I'd recommend a 12" sub and no less than 0.8 cubic feet airspace, something like a 12w6 or Alpine Type R would work great, and have at least 500w of amplification, better 700 or 800.

Very good idea, can anyone confirm the PN for the e92?
I'm fairly certain its 51477122411, 51476956431 or 51477070549. Cheapest I found was about $106 shipped Thanks. Last edited by viperguy212; 08-11-2014 at 12:02 AM.. |
