Breaking Her In

Ok guys, the NEW 08 328i Black on Black, Aluminum Trim, Sport pkg, paddle shifters with steptronic finally came in!!

Ok, so, 2nd day i have the car, i had to take a 600 mile road trip.

I called the dealer, and my sales rep told me there was "No BREAK IN" and to basically go all out with the car.

So, basically the RPMs were kept under 4, and went about 90+ the whole trip on cruise control.

Now, i have about 610 miles, and worried if i should still take it easy or not. Last night, lets say, i had a little to much fun and was hiting high 6's rpm

Setting the rings and heat cycling the engine are your job. But believe that most of the critical phase was performed on BMW's dyno.

Run the engine hard to get compression seating, and throttle fully closed to do the reverse - RPM means nothing unless you are banging the rev limiter - which is allright too,

Once you get it hot, pull over until the engine cools - that is - you can nearly touch the head(s) with your bare hand (takes awhile so bring a cooler and your favorite non-alcoholic drinks, some companionship is always a plus).

Six heat cycles should do the job.

From my limited experience,

Eberhard

Take it easy for the first 3k or it'll drive like the shitty rental 328i i had when i took my car in for service. I swear that rental car is so much slower than the 328 i test drove earlier.

The only thing you really have to break in is the clutch(if you have one) and the brakes. Aside from that, the engine is pretty much broken in.

NICE! glad to hear all the positive post. and Sorry if this was a "redundant" post.

And no to the clutch, its a steptronic transmission. All im asking if its ok to basically hammer it and hit the redline every now and then, if its still under 1k.
