Crankshaft Position Sensor on 6AT car
Threw a couple codes the other night (P2A94, P3100) which caused the car to go into Limp Mode. I cleared them and the car went back to normal, but this morning they popped up again and wouldn't go away even after clearing. Being stuck in Limp Mode, I was forced to bring the car into the closest BMW Dealer since I was 40mi from home.
The plan was to swap out the sensor myself this weekend to save myself the money, but looks like my car wasn't too keen on waiting. I told the dealer it probably just needed the crankshaft position sensor replaced, but after calling two different dealers I kept getting asked "Which sensor failed... the intake or exhaust sensor?" After scouring the forums and looking it up in the Bentley guide, I can find no mention of there being more than one sensor. The dealer told me that the 6AT cars have two sensors and the manual cars only have one. I don't feel like this is right. Can anyone shed some light on this? I don't really feel like being taken advantage of. Thanks.

Thanks for the reply, but that's not what I was asking/looking for. At this point I don't have the option to fix it myself. My car was stuck 40mi away from home and I had no choice but to take it to a dealer.
What I was asking was whether it's true or not that the automatic trans cars have two sensors and manuals only have one. I'm trying to figure out if I'm getting ripped off or not.

Without leading you in the wrong direction I don't believe the auto has anything different.
As you mention your at the dealer at this point so they are doing the repair anyway. Wish I had a better answer. Maybe someone else can chime in. |

Perhaps just provide them with the part number for the sensor in the linked article, and say replace this one, dammit!

One, driver's side. Easy install, shouldn't take them very long.
Part number 8 in the diagram (RealOEM).

Maybe they think the little triangle says "x2"?

I honestly think there's only one and the dealership was either just confused/mistaken or trying to rip me off. Seems like they're only billing me for one, so it's a non-issue for now.

But the answer to your question is that BOTH the AT and MT N54's have ONE CRANKSHAFT SENSOR. Its kind of common sense that the motor, where the crankshaft is located has nothing to do with the transmission. Only has to do with the crank and the crank itself. just my 02cents
