Here are my Limp mode experiences so far.
A little while back i was going into limp mode whilst WOT'ing and it was due to cracked vacuum lines, which are very common on 335i's. Sounds like it might just be this, which is a cheap fix. Last week, I was going into limp mode a few seconds after driving off after a cold start (after warming up first of course). Took the car in to Active on Friday to have the codes read (camshaft error??), the guys traced it to the vanos solenoid (quite a common issue supposedly), replaced it (and got DCI's installed...i just couldnt leave that place without getting a mod of some sort ) and no more limp mode. Car is back to normal. But as others have mentioned, just take it to Active and get the codes read...they'll sort it out. |

The codes I got with my violent jerking at redline were camshaft intake and exhaust, cleaned vanos solenoids and no change, they shouldn't need replacing at only 65k.
I really need somone local who knows their way around the 335 like you guys have in Sydney. Otherwise it just costs thousands while they chase shit they have no idea about. |

but it's still a nice car, but just feel like a lack of boost when overtaking or merging lanes. (unless i use the paddles to gear down) btw, seeing ppl with exhaust pipes on both sides tempts me making a mod too. also, thinking of this little mod: http://www.bimmian.com/Headlight-Acc...r-E93-3-Series |

i'm only going into limp mode very rarely and boost drops off at 5k rpm, think it might be vacuum lines or CP. excuse for a new CP with BOV

Hey guys,
I had the car in for a roadworthy today (i bought the car from interstate so need on for the Vic rego) and got them to read the codes. They were: > 2a87: Exhaust Vanos Mechanism > 3100: Boost Pressure Control Deactivation > 2ee6: Coolant Temperature Sensor Measurement Range > 2ab4: Dme Internal Fault: Ram Check They reckoned it could be a vacuum hose somewhere leaking and wanted to do a smoke pressure test - which I told them to hold off on. Does anyone have any thoughts on these codes? And is the smoke pressure test the right thing to do next? Cheers Andrew |

The DME internal fault could be causing the other issues. You'll more than likely need a new DME. If you're lucky, a re-flash by the dealer with the latest software may fix it.

Might be a silly question - but does something like a JB4 replace the DME completely? Or does it just reconfigure parts of the DME so a faulty DME would still need fixing/replacing? |

The JB4 is installed in addition to the DME. The DME would still need to be replaced.

ahh the joy of owning an n54. When i first purchased mine, it cost me close to 3k to get it roadie'd. Maybe because i didnt know shit all about the car. I think you'll love the car even more when you accept the fact that there could only be one. Mods or wallet. enjoy mate. we're all here to help.
and i dont like the way they treated me over the phone at Southern BM. I wanted to get a quote for LCI tail lights. They gave me a quote for 1300 so i asked if i had source the lights sperately, could they install and code it for me. They blatantly said "We're not interested". So i ordered a set from denmark for $650 and the boys at Activ coded it for me for $50. Good customer services goes a long way. buncha **** |

I seriously wouldn't bother. The DME is what controls the engine and produces/stores all of the fault codes. If the DME has faulty RAM, it can incorrectly throw any fault. Things like VANOS would not cause a DME internal failure fault code but a DME internal failure can cause any other fault codes (eg. VANOS). The DME error is absolutely the one to resolve first and foremost. I wouldn't drive the car at all with that fault.

Update on this.
I had the car in at Active MW and they checked out the codes (since it was cleared at the last diagnostic from the previous place - it was just the Vanos code and boost deactivation code this time. No DME.). So a new Vanos solenoid was installed, and so far so good. I haven't been able to replicate the error again. Hopefully this is all it was. I'm glad i didn't let the previous mechanic go off on a wild goose chase looking for a vacuum leak like they wanted to! Thanks everyone who recommended Active MW - Jin was really helpful, fairly priced, and seems really enthusiastic about his work. Even took me for a spin in his shop 335i. |
