Engine Oil Check

Hi All,

I have a 2006 E90 330d and I checked the engine oil today using the dipstick.

Checked on a cold engine and it was on min.

Warmed the engine to optimum temp, left it for 10 mins checked again and its on max.

Is this normal?

I belive its most accurate when at running temperature also any inclines or declines effect it so try a flat surface aswell

I find my 330d oil level on the dipstick to be annoying to read. it's never the same, I just check it every now and again to make sure it has oil and leave it at that.

Oil should be checked at operating temp. Once you know it's at the right level, check it again cold and then you have the choice of which level to use. I would not recommend adding oil to the full mark when cold.

For my 320d e90, half full cold is perfect.

I believe the book says check when hot but 5 minutes after engine shutdown.
