Unhappy My tapping noise never-endng nightmare!

Hi folks--new to the forums, so here goes...

I bought my first new BMW ever, a 2007 Barique red/Terra 328xi, auto, comfort, premium, cold weather packages, and loved loved loved it...(well, except for the horrible Bridgestone run-flats).

(Okay, why auto: I spent the last decade and 231,000 miles shifting a stick Volvo 850 in commuting traffic and just wanted a break; 6AT is sure the nicest AT's I've ever used.)

But I could hear a distinct tapping or cracking sound from somewhere in the rear of the cabin when driving over sharp bumps.

Took it to the dealer, and after nearly three weeks of trying, they still can't find the noise or stop it! :sad0147:

They removed the rear shelf and drove the car: still there. Removed the rear window and drove car: still there. Now I don't know what they're doing, but it will be two weeks tomorrow since I last saw my baby, and they had it a week before that for the same problem + install of Sirius and iPod.

I've got to hand it to Santa Fe BMW for their persistence, but holy cow I can't believe this is so hard to find.

They did give me a 2007 328xi loaner, which is nice, but I think I've now put more miles on the loaner than I have on my own car. The loaner, with 10,000+ miles, is still thight and doesn't make the cracking sound.

Arrrgh!

There have been posts about a popping sound in the rear window shelf. You want want to search.

Knock on wood, I don't notice anything like that in my car, so I don't know about it other than that it has been discussed quite a bit here. God, I hope I didn't just jinx myself by saying that.

Do you have LoJack? sometimes they have a small gap and will rattle under random conditions.
