if you planning on keeping the car for long while, you should get the related part swap out. but dont think there is actual failure besides the scary noise.

That sounds effin' scary! It might be okay now, but I would definitely recommend getting that looked at because when something does finally fail, it could be catastrophic.

happened to me when I bought a car from a tow yard impound, a 98 Kia Sephia or something. Hadn't run for 3 months, sounded like that. Fresh oil and holding the revs at ~1500 for a few minutes had it purring like a sewing machine.

A lifter tick will not cause anything to your motor. My fathers car started to tick at 120k and has 300k on his X5. I did bring mine in under warranty and they did fix it but I've seen so many with that issue. Its a very very very common problem but it doesn't need to be taken care of. Try to beat on your car or get an oil change with the oem castrol. Different oils can cause ticking as well.

Don't worry this is a common problem on many bmws.

The different higher weight actually causes a lifter tick. A lighter weight would be better. Stick with the recommended.

For example my cousin in his E36 M3 got a lifter tick after an oil change. I told him put the 5w30 back in he put a higher weight in. Noise went away. He put a higher weight due to a leaking oil pan gasket.
